Keeping in the Loop

The Scooter Phenomenon

Does your pre-teen or teen have an electric scooter? What a great way for them to experience freedom! Our neighborhood is perfect for kids to enjoy the pool, play tennis, visit friends, or even head to Dairy Queen—all without needing a driver’s license. However, have you had a conversation with them about road and path safety?

Last summer, the FLCA office received numerous calls and concerns regarding electric scooters on the roads. Many riders seemed unaware of their surroundings, often oblivious to the traffic around them, not anticipating a car's next move, or even realizing when a car was behind them. Often times, groups of scooter riders take up the entire road!

Our walking paths are another area of concern. There’s space for everyone, but scooter riders need to remember that pedestrians have the right of way. When encountering a walker, scooter riders must move off the path, dismount, and allow walkers to pass. They should never zip by or towards walkers or groups of walkers, expecting them to move aside.

Parents, let’s work together to ensure a safe summer for everyone. Please take the time to talk to your child about road safety, being courteous on paths, and being a responsible scooter rider. Thanks!

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!

A heartfelt shout out to some special folks who have and are helping our community in many different ways. First - the Invasive Species Group! Thanks to John Oliver who heads up the group and to David Marrs, Lynn Reed, Roy Hostetter, Will Sanford and Susan Lorenzo who signed up to join him. This group has made a great start in fighting invasive species in our common areas. If you'd like to join the cause, email John at johndoliver@comcast.net. Thanks also go to our tennis volunteers. Several residents helped to lay product on the north courts to get ready for the season. Thanks to Ed Leary, John Oliver, Mo Nadkarni and Andreas Galhmann - great job! Last but not least, Carolyn Huyghe has been our fearless leader in getting all of our bluebird houses up and monitored! And believe it or not, John Oliver is helping her install as well! Dogs' lives are too short. Their only fault, really."

— Agnes Sligh Turnbull, American author and journalist

This week, we said farewell to the best office dog ever. Nola, a young 7 years old, loved life and life loved her. She is missed beyond what words could ever express. Rest in peace sweet girl.

In Nola's honor, we'll be featuring Nola's friends each month. Every dog, according to Nola, was her friend. : )
