Forest Preserve Cancels Civil War Days

2019 Civil War Days Is Canceled Due To Safety Concerns
June 24, 2019 09:11 AM
Due to safety concerns, we are canceling the Civil War Days event scheduled for July 13 and 14, 2019.
"After consulting with local and state law enforcement agencies, we made the decision to cancel the event due to public safety concerns. Our number one concern is the safety of participating Lake County residents and visitors, reenactors and vendors, as well as our staff and volunteers operating the event. They are our top priority," said Ty Kovach, Lake County Forest Preserves Executive Director.

“During the past week, there have been many responses to information stemming from a June 11 Forest Preserves board meeting where Civil War Days was discussed. Some of these responses were very concerning,” said John Tannahill, Director of Public Safety for the Lake County Forest Preserves. “We consulted with local and state law enforcement agencies that specialize in events like this about the responses. Based on their advice, and in an effort to keep everyone safe, canceling is the best decision.”

An educational event, Civil War Days has taken place at Lakewood Forest Preserve in Wauconda for the past 27 years. "The tension around the event this year has changed the tone. We are not going to take a risk. It’s our job to protect preserve visitors, and our employees and volunteers," Tannahill said.

“Vigorous conversations have taken place in the past week at the national, state and local levels, regarding the Civil War Days event. Some of these conversations have led to security concerns. Security concerns must always be taken seriously, making a cancelation of this year’s event the prudent decision,” said Lake County Forest Preserves President Angelo Kyle.

Recently, the Wauconda Police department has taken several reports involving fraud. The method by which the fraud is committed varies and the offenders do not appear to be the same. Do not turn over your personal identifiers, money and/or bank information to anyone that seems suspicious. Government agencies and/or utility companies will never ask for payment via gift cards. They will also never ask you to provide them with details of your personal information via email, website, etc. Also, be wary of people asking to access your computer remotely.

Countryside Fire Warns of Exhaust Fan Fires
Countryside Fire responded to a fire related to a bathroom exhaust fan. They are reminding us that bathroom exhaust fans build up lint and are a FIRE HAZARD! Over time the lint can cause the motor to overheat and ignite the lint, plastic fan blades and nearby combustible wood. Clean your bathroom exhaust fans regularly.

Stiffer Penalties for Texting Behind the Wheel
Illinois drivers this summer will face more serious penalties for texting behind the wheel.
House Bill 4846 , which takes effect July 1, will count first-time incidences of driving while operating a handheld mobile device as a “moving violation.” Under state law, moving violations appear on motorists’ driving record, and drivers who receive three moving violations in a year see their driver’s license suspended. State Legislature Increases Gas Tax
Illinois’ state gas tax will increase to 38 cents a gallon from 19 a gallon effective July 1.
The state motor fuel tax will also be tied to inflation, meaning it will automatically rise in future years without lawmaker approval. In addition, Lake County will now have authority to implement a gas tax up to 8 cents a gallon.
