What Is A Snow Moon?
The explanation behind the name Snow Moon is straightforward. It is known as The Snow Moon because the snowfalls that occur in the month of February have the heaviest snow on average. According to data from the National Weather Service. In the 1760s, Captain Jonathan Carver, who had visited with the Naudowessie (Dakota), wrote that the name used for this period was the Snow Moon, “because more snow commonly falls during this month than any other in the winter.”

Historical Tidbit:
Acadians in Halifax
|
The forced removal by the British government of the French Acadians was extremely brutal, removing them by force from the present day Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, an area known as Acadia.
During the period between 1755 and 1764, thousands were shipped out of their country as prisoners of war. The first group of Acadians were shipped to the "Thirteen Colonies", with a great number being shipped to Boston where they were separated and sent to different towns.
A family by the name of LeBlanc were taken in by Zebediah Thomson in Halifax. Zebediah's homestead was located on what today is known as Thompson Street.
Here, near the Tomson garrison house, Simonette LeBlanc became greatly interested in farming, and one of the first things he did was to ask for a piece of land where he could plant a garden.
He was told to make his own selection and chose a valley north of the house, which had a small pond in the center. That spot, for many years, was known as the French gardens.
The Thomson family, saddend for the displaced family, treated them very kindly over the six years spent with them. The LeBlanc's were finally free to go at the end of the French and British War and it is said they moved on because of their difference in religious belief, going to Vermillion Parish, Louisiana. Another family by the name of Pomeroy, is said to have lived in a house near where the Palmer Mill on Palmer Mill road stood.
(During this time, many children were taken away from their parents and were distributed to various families throughout Massachusetts. The government also arranged the adoption of orphaned children and provided subsidies for housing and food for a year.)
Respectfully Submitted, Sue Basile

Freshmen in Ms. Ferrara’s class attended a “book tasting” event in the library, hosted by Mrs. Mathias!
This activity is part of a nonfiction unit designed by Ms. Ferrara and Mrs. Afanasiw that culminates in students writing their own memoir. Today, students moved around the “restaurant” and “tested” different memoirs...each book serving as the main course or beverage and bookmarks as the fork and knife! facebook.com/SilverLakeRegionalHighSchool 2/25/21

Halifax Beautification Committee
Halifax is one of the few towns in Massachusetts that has a sense of a small-town vibe. Where it is easy to meet everyone with a hint of a rural ambience as a bonus. Here where the missions of the Halifax Beautification Committee starts to better the neighborhood for future residents. The Halifax Beautification Committee suggest the following steps to better the neighborhood as a Halifaxan:
- Be a “Litter Buster” by picking up litter around your neighbourhood and the town
- Join us on Spring & Fall Clean-Up Days
- Reduce, reuse and recycle
- Reconsider online orders because packing, energy and emissions should be considered.
- Compost!
- Shop second hand and when you can’t buy in bulk
- Shop local- support local businesses, artisans and farmers
- Use natural products as often as possible
- Join a CSA and/or grow your own food
- Carpool when possible to reduce emissions
- Use reusable bottles vs single-use beverage containers
By those few steps, we can reach the goals that the Halifax Beautification Committee is thriving to reach!! Such as Reducing litter, overseeing the maintenance of Margaret Fitzgerald Garden at the Town Hall and Beautifying public spaces. So grab your masks and your tools and thrive in a better and new Halifax!!

In the past few months, we had an abundance of snow piling up in our driveway or our backyard. Some of us leave it until it melts in the Spring others get creative with it, by making snow figurines. Meet Frederick Corrigan, Halifax resident with his latest piece of art titled "Clifford's House." Posing is one of America's childhood characters, giving us a blast from the past with eerie alien eyes that glow in the dark. Frederick Corrigan has been creating beautiful sculptures over the years. Giving us a reason to smile in our daily events.
Thank You, Frederick Corrigan, for sharing your art with us!!!
