Ridge Point High School's Analyzing Dissolved Oxygen in Local Creeks and in the Classroom

Advanced Placement science students at Ridge Point High School are “Analyzing Dissolved Oxygen in Local Creeks and in the Classroom” thanks to a $1,260 grant awarded to teacher, Carolyn Mathews-Borak. The students use handheld, waterproof dissolved oxygen meters during field study data collection and laboratory investigations. The meters help detect the amount of oxygen in the water, which is a good indicator of the presence of pollution. The meters are also used to monitor the amount of oxygen plants and animals produce. Through data collection and analysis, the students are developing a deeper understanding of how pollution impacts the environment and health.

Creating Student Centered Learning Spaces at First Colony Middle School

Discovery Program teachers at First Colony Middle School have expanded learning spaces for 6th graders, thanks to a $4,991 school site grant awarded by the Fort Bend Education Foundation. With the grant, the teachers purchased stand up desks, 14-inch chairs, bean bags, round tables, and other items for students. The furniture in the shared spaces, helps promote collaboration and create a sense of community and ownership among the students. Students are also more focused and able to process information more readily while stationed comfortably in their flex seating.

Palmer Elementary School’s Movement that Counts

With funding for her “Movement that Counts” grant, Palmer Elementary School’s PE teacher Shannon Bandish Nash purchased material to support students’ social, emotional, and physical health. Her $1,692 grant award allowed her to acquire Action Based Learning mats (keyboard, telephone math and pattern mats) that students access during Planning Learning Communities in their PE/Health class. Movement on the mats helps organize students’ brains for learning and re-enforce academic concepts taught in the classroom. Students read, solve math problems, and review vocabulary all while engaging in purposeful movements on the mats.
