GRANTS IN ACTION

Madden Elementary’s “Let’s make a POINT to start Strong in Letter Formation”
Madden Elementary kindergarteners are learning proper letter formation thanks to teacher Ruth Schmalz! With a $1,449 FBEF grant, she ordered sets of Trace & Write magnetic boards for students to use in the classroom literacy stations. Students place an activity card, showing an upper- or lower-case letter, on the left side of the board and trace the letter with their finger. They then use the stylus to write the letter on the board’s writing surface. They can erase the letter and practice repeatedly before moving on to the next activity card. The students enjoy working independently while strengthening their literacy skills

Sartartia’ Middle School's “Stepping Up Our Math Game with Equivalent Fractions, Decimals, and Percents”
Learning has become more visible and accessible to everyone at Sartartia Middle School. With her FBEF grant, teacher Cynthia Hitchcock purchased and placed 14 vinyl decals on the risers of steps in one of the school’s stairwells. Each decal includes a benchmark fraction, decimal, and percent equivalent, along with a visual model. (For example: 0.25 = 25% = 1/4. The graphics include a quarter, a 25% charged battery and 1/4 of a circle shaded in.) Seeing visuals each day helps students transfer the basic facts from short-term to long-term memory, while emphasizing the importance of math.
