Buck's Backyard Finalists Selected

McCollum Hall's Art Stumble 2020 selection committee has selected three finalists to present their vision to Fort Myers Public Art Committee (PAC) on September 15.

Artists Michael Rosato, JP Almonicid, and Erik Schlake were recommended by the committee. Each artist submitted initial concepts and/or examples of similar mural work in other communities.

The artists have each been awarded $500 to further develop their design concept for a scheduled presentation to the PAC. The final selection will be made at that meeting.

Art Stumble 2020 will be an artistic mural painting event that features the painting of murals on 17 panels of the concrete barrier wall behind McCollum Hall. The theme of the mural collection is a “wall” that symbolizes the positive influences of diversity designed to promote pride in the Fort Myers Dunbar community, as well as a way to support economic growth with aesthetic enhancement. A block party will be held in 2021, where the community can watch the murals being painted while enjoying other pieces of art on display, vendors, refreshments, and music.
JP Almonicid's colorful mural entry for Buck's Backyard at McCollum Hall, above, was based on the black and white photo of the Anderson Avenue Package Store, which was open in McCollum Hall during its heyday.

Two Exhibits Open August 7 During Art Walk,
Sounds of Summer Features Tribute Bands

The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center (SBDAC) offers two beautiful art exhibitions in August. The Feminine Mystique, a solo exhibition by Lesley Morrow, will be featured in the Grand Atrium. In the Capital Gallery, view the 3rd Annual Carded Miniature Masterpieces.

In The Feminine Mystique, Lesley Morrow expresses the feminine experience through bold, raw, and sensitive brush strokes and use of color. She expresses feminine mystique through contemporary portraiture that includes both celebrity and iconic women, capturing their strength, their faces, and the chaos behind the façade.

Carded Miniature Masterpieces comes back again for the third year! Artists of all mediums participate, creating miniature masterpieces that are 2 1/2 by 3 1/2 inches in size. Miniature art has been in existence for centuries. The first Artist Trading Card (ATC) dates back to 1997 in Zurich as a collaborative cultural performance. Precursors to ATCs were modern trading cards such as cigarette cards and sports cards. The ATC concept advocates popular art: Art not for museums or auctions but from and within everyday life.

Closing out this year's Sounds of Summer Concert Series are two popular tribute bands, The Nowhere Band on August 21 and zSTONEz on August 22. On Friday, The Nowhere Band is Southwest Florida’s premier Beatles tribute band. Covering the full spectrum of The Beatles’ long and varied career, The Nowhere Band creates an unparalleled reproduction, entirely live (with no pre-recorded material) of 60’s Beatles performances. The next night, zSTONEz is Southwest Florida’s premier Rolling Stones tribute band. The band blends period costumes, authentic instruments, modern lighting, and a talented quartet of musicians to create an experience any true Rolling Stones fan, young or young-at-heart, simply can’t afford to miss.

Living Art Combines Exotic Plants and Botanical Art

In August, DAAS CO-OP Art Gallery & Gifts features a very different type of exhibition, combining the beauty of exotic plants as pieces of natural art, complemented by artworks from the talented Aaron Apsley. The show is co-hosted by neighboring Thrifty Garden, and owner Richard Molek’s amazing collection of indoor and outdoor specimens.

“I see them [plants] as exquisite sculptures or three-dimensional masterpieces, with their unique leafs and colors, created by nature itself.” says Molek, who has a passion for all kinds of plants. “Some of the [plant] species are rare and very dear to me, as I have been growing them for years in my personal collection.”

Aaron Apsley is a graduate from the Savannah School of Art and Design (SCAD). He became interested in botanical illustration while living in New York City. Since 2019 he has lived in Southwest Florida.
