A Walk on the Art Side in Fort Pierce
The art explosion in Historic Downtown Fort Pierce might seem like something very new, but Art Walk has been happening for more than a decade. Granted, it was a shorter walk when it was started by the artists of Art Mundo, a cooperative by 40 independent artists in an old bank building at 111 Orange Avenue. Many of the artists scattered when the rent was raised by new owners of the building, with some of them establishing their own studios or galleries downtown. An artist friend from Seriously Mixed Media, Janet Bird Fuller, told me there are still more than 20 artists and a printing business in the Art Bank.
Art Walk participating galleries as well as artists can vary in number from month to month, but some things never change. Fuller said, “Art Walk occurs 12 months a year--on the 3rd Friday of every month from 5-8 p.m. Rain or shine. In the decade old history of Art Walk we have never cancelled an event--except, for a hurricane.”
Fuller described a typical Art Walk as the only time in the month when all the artists are in attendance to visit with Art Walkers. “Light refreshments are served. There's live music and performance art on the Downtown sidewalks. Periodically, there are live art demos. In season, galleries host guest artists' exhibits.”
Art Walk does not have a website but is very active on Facebook, where a map and a list of the galleries is posted for download a few days before Art Walk evening. Some restaurants and retail shops keep extended hours during Art Walk but for the most part do not host related events or promotions. Except, Fuller said, for “Notions & Potions at 116 2nd St. Beryl Muise, the shop owner, is very active in the Downtown Business Association and hosts local artists' exhibits and monthly promotions that include our art galleries, such as Christmas in July. Last Art Walk, she hosted a free paint party, whereby anyone could paint wooden fish for the Main Street Fort Pierce Edgartown Fish on a Fence Project. Swig of Color frequently hosts paint parties during Art Walk.”
Fish on a Fence? “Main Street Fort Pierce is hosting the most extraordinary community art project. Local artists are painting and decorating three different fish and a Manatee—over 100 in all—that will be displayed on a fence across the street from their office at the Platts/Backus House. Featured is one created by our (
Seriously Mixed Media
) Resident Artist Janet Bird Fuller—Steampunk Submarine Shark.”
The next Art Walk is July 19, 5-8 p.m., barring hurricanes, of course.

Treasure Coast Youth Symphony
has announced its 2019-2020 audition schedule. Guidelines and requirements are many, so please visit the website for information and online registration form.
The Gifford Youth Orchestra
will hold a free summer camp July 29-Aug. 2 for children between the ages of 8 and 18 at the GYO Modular Unit (behind the Gifford Youth Achievement Center at 4875 43
rd
Ave., Vero Beach) daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required. Call Iva Powell at 772-563-7072.
The summer camp, in its second year, “lets the children cool off in the pool, make new friends, and try out some new instruments,” says Dr. Crystal Bujol, the GYO’s co-founder and artistic director. “It introduces children who are not members to the Gifford Youth Orchestra and provides them some fun time learning a little more about music.
“It also brings our GYO students together more closely,” she says. “They come from different schools throughout the county and the camp helps them bond at the same time they fine-tune their skills and knowledge in a fun way.” As well as the pool, the camp will offer music crafts, drumming, piano and string performances.
Among staff members will be Vero Beach piano teacher Sue Lorimier, violinist Safa Elzein, GYO Program Director Iva Powell, and Dr. Bujol. “Demand for spaces at our camp is always greater than our capacity,” says Dr. Bujol, so it’s mandatory to make reservations.”

Art Connection Fort Pierce
I wonder how many other readers have driven through Fort Pierce on US Hwy 1 and been caught at a red light by an old building sporting a commemorative mural on the north side. I’ve looked at it with curiosity, wondering what promises the blackboard promoting The Potbellied Pig is making. I recently touched base with Cathy Estremera of Cathy’s Curiosities on Facebook and asked what it’s all about.
Yes, it is an old building. The Arcade building was built in 1926 in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, she said. “At the time it was the largest commercial building in Fort Pierce. It is currently owned by the Brackett family who have kept it immaculately maintained to honor its historic past. The building offers a Community Room that is open to the public and filled with all types of historical memorabilia related to Fort Pierce and the Arcade Building.” Estremera added, “The Arcade Building is also listed on the Main Street Fort Pierce Mural Trail since there are two exterior murals that were created in 2002 and a beautiful trompe l’oeil created by Peter & Halina Geselowitz inside near the Art Connection. The trompe l’oeil reflects patrons (and a peacock) admiring art in a gallery.”
Estremera is one of more than two dozen artists who have created an art collaborative to share the expense of a gallery. The Art Connection of Fort Pierce is a non-profit started several years ago “with the goal of providing a gallery where new and emerging artists can show and sell their artwork alongside established artists at a reasonable price.” It’s managed by a team of artists — Judith Suit & Larry Burchard (The Wood Shanty); Jennifer Shibona (Mad Chiwawa Designs); Diane Stark-Kennedy (Naturally Inspired); and Cathy Estremera (Cathy’s Curiosities) — who volunteer their time, talent, and knowledge to operate the gallery.
The current roster of artists in Art Connection with gallery space: Dona Alexander, Paul Bauders, Dale Beam, Janet Bird Fuller, William Blazak, Asia Booth, Gerald Cannizzaro, Nick Cascio, Diane Concepcion, Michael Evans, Gail Goldstein, Greg Hold, Laura Irle, Christine Kee, Tom LaDuc, Barbara Lyons, Vishma Maharaj, Wanda Planer, Brittany Posten, Sheep, Genevieve Smith, Doreen Tassone, Holly Theuns, Sophia Tranoris, Barbara Warren, Joe Young.
in addition to the professional artists in Art Connection, space has been donated to the Lindsay School of Arts to display student artwork. “Also, Maureen Peterman’s family has several pieces of her artwork at the gallery whose sales will go to benefit the Lindsay School in her memory,” Estremera said.

Mike Block's Music Festival
Mike Block and his world-class musicians are in Vero Beach this week for a series of free concerts following his annual Mike Block String Camp at First Presbyterian Church. Wednesday and Friday performances are at 7:30 and will feature “Americana, Bluegrass, Celtic, Folk, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Indian, and more from the Faculty of Mike Block String Camp, as well as advanced student groups,” Block said.
The final concert, July 13 at 3 p.m., Block calls the “Culminating Concert & Barn Dance.” This one features String Camp participants, including many local kids. Seven of the String Camp students are members of the Gifford Youth Orchestra: Luke Pelt, Jada Powell, Jhovanny Vite, Tatiana Wallace, Isabella Cruz, Pryscalina Douzable, and Mieca-Eeja Ferguson. Donations offered in lieu of an admission charge support the camp’s scholarship fund. Several of the GYO students received scholarship assistance this year. Dr. Crystal Bujol, co-founder and artistic director of the GYO, said, “This camp of intensive string instrument training and international student interaction paints pictures for the minds of our children that are much more than just 1000 words,” she says. “Mike Block's Camp touches their souls, their spirits, and their hearts with dreams of better tomorrows.”
On a personal Mike Block note: “My wife (Celtic fiddler Hanneke Cassel) and I welcomed a baby girl in mid-March! We’re very excited, grateful, and sleep deprived. Those of you following my social media may have seen that I was actually on tour in New Zealand with Silkroad Ensemble when her water broke 3.5 weeks early … I was able to immediately hop on a plane from Aukland (missing the last few concerts of the tour …), and 25 anxious hours later I arrived at the hospital in time to be there for the birth! It’s been a special two months to take time off from traveling and focus on the new family! :)” He added, “baby Eilidh will be with us :) “ No, I don't know how to pronounce it.

Road Trip! to Fairchild Garden's Mango Festival
An event I went to when I lived in Miami long ago made such an impression on me that I’m still telling people about it many years later. I suppose it helps if the listener is as much a mango nut as I am, but even for those who don’t give a fig about mangos, Fairchild Tropical Garden is a destination to add to your road trip list. Yes, it’s a long drive through awful traffic, so you might consider making it a weekend visit on the way home from a trip to the Keys.
The event in question is this weekend’s 27th annual Mango Festival. I didn’t remember that I must have been there for the first one! I won’t go into much detail here but will say that there’s a reason someone came up with the term “mangomania.” I recommend reading the description and schedule on
the website
before you make plans to go. It’s much more than wandering through mountains of mangos, although for some of us that would be enough. There are educational workshops, activities for kids, mango tasting, even a mango auction.
If you were in Vero Beach for the Wine & Film Festival a few weeks ago, you might have enjoyed food prepared by Miami chef Norman Van Aken at one of the events. Van Aken, back home in Miami, will be preparing a Florida Kitchen Lunch Saturday at the Mango Festival. Kids will find more than the typical festival face painting and bounce house. There’s a Mango Kids Culinary Challenge, with kids sharing family favorite dishes. There will be 15 varieties of mango trees for sale, some of them perfect for backyard gardens. It might help if you print out or download the map of
Fairchild Tropical botanic Garden
ahead of time. It’s a lot of territory to cover for those willing to explore beyond the exhibit area.
The garden is named for Dr. David Fairchild, a pioneer in plant exploration. When he retired to Miami in 1935, he surrounded himself with others passionate about horticulture and plant collection, including Marjory Stoneman Douglas and
landscape architect William Lyman Phillips
, who later was selected by Arthur McKee and Waldo Sexton to design McKee Botanical Garden in Vero Beach.
The Garden opened to the public in 1938 and through the years became a crucial hub for plant collection and research. From the website: “In 1984, the Garden became a member of the Center for Plant Conservation, a consortium of botanic gardens involved in preservation of endangered U.S. flora. Since Hurricane Andrew in 1992, Fairchild plant collecting efforts have intensified dramatically, as scientists sought not only to restore the Garden's collections, but also to identify and save endangered plants throughout the tropics. Since that time,
Fairchild's collections now include tropical fruit, orchids, and Florida and native plants.”
