The right to vote is a privilege of citizenship that every one of us should cherish. It is our power to govern. But, with this power comes responsibility. It has been said that citizens get the government that they deserve.
This election cycle should find every one of us voting, but armed with the knowledge of who the candidates are and the issues presented.
VOTE responsibly; VOTE proudly; but just VOTE.

On Saturday, Sept. 24, I provided remarks during the grand opening of phase I of Canyon District Park and at the groundbreaking for Palm Beach County Library System's upcoming 18th library location, the Canyon Branch.

|
Canyon District Park Grand Opening
Phase I of the park project consists of 36 acres, including three lighted multipurpose fields, a restroom/concession building, a maintenance facility, group picnic shelters, a one-mile paved fitness trail with 13 exercise stations and parking for 251 vehicles.
The cost for phase I was $11 million and was funded through Impact Fees and Infrastructure Sales Tax proceeds. I am excited that phase I of the park is finally complete.
The county will begin the design for Phase II in November and it will likely include four lighted baseball/softball fields, a destination playground, a second restroom/concession building, picnic areas and additional parking spaces. Phase II is expected to move forward by the spring of 2023 and be completed by early 2024.

Canyon District Library Groundbreaking
Located in the Canyon Town Center at Boynton Beach Blvd. and Lyons Rd., the new library will serve the needs of this area’s growing communities. Being near the new Canyon District Park, the Canyon Branch will advance the Library System's vision to open minds to a world of unlimited possibilities.
The branch construction is excepted to be complete in early 2024. This will be the fifth library branch to be located in my district and I predict it may be the busiest in the county.

Remember Scotty, the shelter dog from Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control (ACC)? He joined us in Chambers on Oct. 4, as I presented a proclamation declaring October 2022 as Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month in Palm Beach County.
I am pleased to share that he is participating in the Magic City K9 Prison Training program. The program prepares dogs to fill a variety of roles. Magic City K9’s Director Dee Hoult, goes into the shelters herself to select the dogs best suited for the program. Scotty was accepted into the program because of his disposition and unique personality.
Once selected, the dogs are sent to Everglades Correctional Institution in West Miami-Dade County. Each dog is assigned to an inmate trainer and a handler who have been trained to care for the dog, including outdoor walks, feeding and obedience training.
ACC is proud to have provided 30 dogs over the past two years to the program. By graduation day, both the dog and the handler will have gained valuable experience that will benefit them later in life.
Staff members from ACC were sad to say goodbye, but are excited about his new chapter.
Stay tuned next month, as I will feature another animal from ACC in need of a forever home.

I'm looking for a family-friendly Halloween event for my small children. Are there any events happening in the Boca Raton area?
|
|
Daggerwing Nature Center is hosting "Hoot 'N' Howl," on Friday, Oct. 28.
Bring the kids in costume and enjoy family-friendly Halloween games and crafts, while learning about nocturnal creatures such as owls, toads, snakes and spiders!
Remember to bring a flashlight and bug spray to continue the adventure outside along the boardwalk at night.
Daggerwing Nature Center is located in the Burt Aaronson South County Regional Park, at 11435 Park Access Rd., Boca Raton, 33498.

America Recycles Day
As Vice Chair of the Governing Board of the Authority, I encourage all Palm Beach County residents to take part in America Recycles Day on Saturday, Nov. 12.
Celebrate America Recycles Day by watching your garbage get recycled into energy, protecting your identity by shredding personal documents, seeing how your yellow and blue recycling bins are processed, and safely recycling or disposing of household hazardous wastes. Also onsite to add to the fun will be a variety of food trucks, environmentally-focused vendors, games, a puppet show and a heavy equipment expo.
