Prices are higher this year and goods are limited. But instead of the stress of shopping, let’s give something that costs nothing but means so much... the gift of a smile, a helping hand and a shared moment with a stranger who will soon be a friend. This is the holiday spirit. If we all shared some cheer, Palm Beach County would truly be the warmest place on Earth.
Happy Holidays to you and yours!

Preserving the Agricultural Reserve
One of the most important missions I have as the Commissioner for the Agricultural Reserve is to PRESERVE it. Those in office before me placed into County codes, strict rules on parcels for preservation and for development. It is critical that we as a community understand the importance of agriculture, open spaces and meeting the needs of the residents of this pristine area.
For this reason, I brought up before the County Commission various parcels in the Agricultural Reserve for discussion. As a result of my action, a Workshop has been scheduled for March 28th beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Robert Weisman Governmental Center. Before the Workshop, I need to hear your opinion. Please contact Vivian at 561-355-2205 or by email at vleiva@pbcgov.org, if you’d like to schedule a meeting in the south county office.

The FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute
The pace of the advancements and breakthroughs in Neuroscience is exciting.
These discoveries provide hope to millions with brain disorders. I had the opportunity of touring the new FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute.
The Brain Institute, led by Executive Director Randy D. Blakely, PhD., provides research, education and a one of a kind opportunity for those in the beginnings of their neuroscience careers across multiple Colleges and Departments such as Florida Atlantic University, the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and the Scripps Research Institute.
The study of Autism, Alzheimer’s and other brain disorders are studied through the use of advanced technology.

Lighting the Path for Higher Education for Local Students
I welcomed many eager students plus interviewers from some of the top employers
in the County to a Path to College Speed Interview Night. Christina Romelus, Humanitarian, and Path to College Director of Programs, organized this event where young people practiced their interview skills. Students from local Title 1 schools were assisted and guided in competing for and acquiring scholarships into top tier universities. A game changer for the future of many students that otherwise would have been overlooked. A rewarding experience for the students and an honor for me.

I am a very friendly dog and I would love to be part of your family. I was brought to the shelter as a stray, but I do know simple commands. If you are looking for companionship, I would be so excited to come home with you. I am a big dog but full of energy, good with kids and other dogs. If you are interested in adopting me, visit Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control Division's SNAP website here.
Stay tuned for the next issue, as I will feature another animal from ACC in need of a forever home.
