Forum Focus

June 2021

Message to Our Membership
Dear Members

Our Annual Membership Meeting on May 20 featuring Scarsdale Mayor Jane Veron, who generously shared her time to engage the Forum in a comprehensive Q&A session, was one of our best-attended membership events of the year. It is a testament to the Forum's momentum, and the leadership of this year's board and committee chairs, our wonderful members, and past president Madelaine Eppenstein. Even during the unprecedented pandemic from which we are just beginning to emerge, our collective efforts have made the Scarsdale Forum the place to be for serious analysis and debate of issues important to our community.

We'll offer more thought-provoking programs in the fall, but there's plenty of activity scheduled throughout the summer months. Our committees will continue their work on pending projects, discuss new topics, and lay the groundwork for reports to be released during 2021-2022. To remind members about the variety and scope of our committees, we've included the Forum's traditional June summary of many of them below. New committee members are welcome to join any of the committees of their choice – no prior experience with any topic is required.

Sincerely,

Eli Mattioli, President

Our Scarsdale Forum Committees
Assessment Revaluation
Members study matters relating to past and future assessment revaluations of property values in Scarsdale.

Climate Resilience
Climate Resilience has moved beyond its initial study of comparable communities’ work on the complex issues of climate resilience, the public climate resilience and climate action plans they have produced, the techniques they employed by which slight modifications to existing policies or projects helped their communities more effectively prepare for climate change, and the opportunities for funding that their local governments availed themselves of in the wake of such community planning. The committee has expanded its study to work on Scarsdale's status as a New York State Climate Smart Community, Scarsdale's need for building resilience to and mitigating the impacts of climate change, and its overlapping interests with the work of the Sustainability, Municipal Services and Zoning and Planning committees.

Communications
Members develop internal and external communications materials, such as the monthly Forum Focus newsletter, press releases, notices, social media posts, and flyers to promote Scarsdale Forum news and events.

County Fiscal Affairs
Members review the proposed Westchester County budget and provide analysis and recommendations to the Westchester County Board of Legislators.

Downtown Revitalization
This group reviews issues related to the vitality and development of the Scarsdale Village Center. It has studied perspectives of both consumers and merchants to help re-imagine how our community can build a thriving downtown.

Municipal Services
The Municipal Services Committee has a practical impact on the health, safety, well being, and quality of life in Scarsdale by studying issues and policies being considered by village government, and making recommendations to the village on a wide range of policies, procedures and operational matters that impact traffic safety, pesticide use, noise abatement, sanitation and highway practices to name just a few of the committee's areas of study and advocacy.

Program

SCARSDALE FOUNDATION HONOR ROLL

The Scarsdale Foundation provides need-based scholarships for Scarsdale students who are in their sophomore, junior, or senior year in college. The Foundation is currently fundraising for scholarships via the Volunteer Honor Roll as its annual gala, the Scarsdale Bowl, is once again cancelled due to the pandemic.

The goal is to reach 2,021 honorees by June 20. Throughout this pandemic, many of us have looked for opportunities to help others in need. Here’s an easy way to give back and honor your friends and neighbors on the Scarsdale Foundation’s Honor Roll. For just $25 each, you can honor or remember as many individuals or organizations as you like.

Use this link to nominate your favorite volunteers and contribute to Scarsdale Foundation's 2021 Volunteer Honor Roll Campaign.
