To Facilitate the Collaboration of All the Stakeholders in the STL Region's Built Environment in Creating Inclusive, Robust Employment and Economic Growth.

"Seven Questions" Can Help You Get to Know M/WBEs

Construction Forum's Seven Questions, a regular video interview feature, will be shared in the Forum's newsletter and also as a growing resource on our website. One W/MBE firm will be spot-lighted each week. We hope that it will become a helpful resource for majority contractors and owners who want to know more about our Region’s great Minority- and Women-Owned Businesses.

Meet Jennifer Bingman

Jennifer Bingman, owner of Wentzville-based Bingman Construction, came into the construction industry working in business development. Raised as “an Air Force brat,” she found as she studied construction documents that the structure and order of construction held a strong appeal.

“It’s all about the corners and edges,” she said. “Construction is amazing that way. You really do need to pay attention to the corners.”

SURVEY: Help Forum Benchmark Welcoming Construction Culture

Our industry needs many new skilled trades workers in the next few years. But ATTRACTING workers doesn’t matter if we don’t RETAIN them. That starts with how workers are treated on the job.

This anonymous survey, developed by Construction Forum with the help of over 200 industry professionals, is designed to capture a picture of the current construction workplace culture in St. Louis. Your contribution to this survey will always remain anonymous. We will combine all the responses to provide input and direction for companies and organizations seeking to improve retention and workplace culture.

With your help, it will capture both successes and challenges.

Please take a few minutes to complete it. The survey is designed to give us a starting point, as well as processes that show success.

How Electrified Roads Could Help Fix U.S. EV Charging Problem

From CNBC: Electric vehicles are taking up an increasing percentage of the overall auto market share every year — rising from 4% in 2020 to 14% last year. Among the holdouts, a lack of charging infrastructure seems to be one of consumers’ most common reasons for not switching from gas to electric vehicles.

But now, electric road projects are appearing across the world as a potential solution to supplement static charging, allowing EV drivers to wirelessly charge their cars while they drive.

Succession Planning Maximizes Benefits for Owners and Successors

by Brad Zimmerman, Attorney, Carmody MacDonald

Successful small and medium-size business owners tend to focus most of their attention on managing the daily operations and growing their business’ profitability. Many owners hope to one day sell their business to a third party, pass it down to the next generation of their family or turn it over to their employees, enabling them to retire with peace of mind that their legacy will continue uninterrupted. They often spend years doing this while overlooking the importance an exit strategy can have on their future, both individually and for the business.

Renewable Energy Infrastructure Expanding

From Business Facilities: The past two years have seen a significant acceleration in annual clean energy investment worldwide, according to the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) report World Energy Investment 2023. The report’s analysis highlights the impact of the volatile fossil fuel markets resulting from the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine, which has expedited the adoption of various clean energy technologies. Improved economics, particularly in the context of high and volatile fossil fuel prices, increased policy support through initiatives like the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, and new programs in Europe, Japan, China, and other regions are also factors in this growth.

Best 10 States for Small Business Taxes

From Construction Dive: With no corporate or personal income taxes, Nevada ranks as the most tax-friendly state for small business in 2023, according to a study from SimplifyLLC, a publication for small business owners.

About 11.2% of state governments’ income on average came from state and local taxes in 2022, the highest share in decades. That’s driving 16% of small businesses, including specialty contractors, subcontractors and most home builders, to increasingly worry about the impact taxes have on their businesses’ bottom lines, according to the study.
