Historical Tidbit:
Carver Cotton Gin Company

Bridgewater native Eleazer Carver (1785-1866) organized the E. Carver Company and bought a factory here in 1842. A new Carver Company factory was built in 1872. The company employed nearly 2,000 workers and was a world-renowned marker of Carver's "patent cotton gin" and other machines. The cotton gin was used to separate seeds from cotton fibers to make clothing and linens. The Carver Company factory was an important industry in East Bridgewater until it closed in 1992. A dam on the Satucket River next to the factory provided power for the manufacturing operations. For thousands of years before the dam was built, Wampanoag Native Americans used the river for fishing and hunting. In 2017, the dam was removed to restore a free-flowing river system and improve the habitat for migratory fish, including river herring and American eel.

The effort to remove the dam in 2017 was led by the MA Division of Ecological Restoration, in partnership with the Town of East Bridgewater's Historical Commission, the Nature Conservancy, NOAA Restoration Center, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the MA Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs Dam and Seawall Repair or Removal Program, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the Plymouth County League of Sportsmen. Check out the new marker documenting the importance of this site as part of our town's industrial, ecological, and cultural history.

Police and Fire Departments Receive Big Donation

Police Chief Paul O’Brien and Fire Chief Timothy Harhen would like to thank the East Bridgewater Ocean State Job Lot for their donation of personal protective equipment (PPE) to the East Bridgewater Police and Fire Departments. Friday morning, Ocean State Job Lot Team Leader Jeff Perry donated $11,150 worth of PPE to the departments.

“We are incredibly grateful for everything our local first responders do within our community every day,” Perry said. “In the spring, Ocean State Job Lot donated a smaller supply of masks to every police and fire department in the 140 communities where our stores are located. We are pleased to now be able to make this larger contribution to the police and fire departments.”
The donated items include 3,000 surgical masks, 1,600 KN95 masks, 20 gallons of hand sanitizer, 15 infra-red non-contact thermometers and 10 face shields for each department. First responders will use the equipment to protect them from exposure to coronavirus as they respond to calls involving people who may be reporting symptoms in line with COVID-19 or may have been in contact with a positive COVID-19 case. As the virus continues to spread, the department aims to keep personnel healthy to continue to serve the community.

“We are extremely grateful for this donation of personal protective equipment given the recent increase in COVID-19 cases in the Commonwealth,” Chief Harhen said. “This donation will go a long way in ensuring the protection of the department’s firefighters, EMTs and paramedics.”
Present at the donation today were Select Chairwoman Carole Julius, Vice Chairman David Sheedy, Town Administrator Brian Noble, Fire Chief Timothy Harhen, Police Chief Paul O’Brien, Store Team Leader Jeffrey Perry, members of the police and fire departments and East Bridgewater Ocean State Job Lot staff.

“We would like to thank the Ocean State Job Lot staff for their kind donation,” Chief O’Brien said. “Thanks to their generosity we will be able to properly administer care to our community while ensuring we can protect the health of our residents and our officers.”
The equipment will be issued to police and fire personnel as needed as the COVID-19 situation continues to develop.

We celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Woman's right to vote this week. The theme: "Forward Into Light."

Our daughters now learn that a woman's place is where ever her imagination takes her! Thank you, courageous women who went before us! To commemorate, and to remind us it can take to long to get it right, here is the winner of BrPL's Suffrage Poetry Contest: Melody Rivas

What About Me?

The war was not won in 1920
Yet there were still white women aplenty
Dropping their signs, leaving the streets, raising their voices to whoop with glee
Drowning out the frantic colored cries of
“What about me?”
The war was not won in 1930
Many women were left still yearning
To vote right next to their fair skinned peers,
To get what they had been denied for years
Their voices were silenced their ballots were empty
But they did not stop in 1920
The war was not won in 1950
but there was no time to waste on pity
American women from all shades of life
Natives, Hispanics, and Blacks alike
Never stopped making and painting their signs
Never stopped fighting to gain voting rights
And when met with a pale opposing crowd
They raised their voices twice as loud
Nothing would stop them, not even their fear
They continued their fight, right up to the year
Of 1965
When a fateful rally was planned
To march the highway from Selma to
A piece of Montgomery land
Though their protest was peaceful
Bloody Sunday still did raze
And by state troopers meant to protect
they were beaten, gassed, and tazed
But despite the attacks the protesters
Would not be scared away
They continued their highway march
To span all of 3 days
Through this injustice they fought back
And they were paid off with
The Voting Rights Acts
The war was won in August of 1965
When colored woman across the nation
Were able to set down their signs
When they stepped off the streets and to
The polling place formed lines
When they stood together and said
“The right to vote is mine”
American society is learning to respect all human beings. As everyone is invited to collaborate equally, our lives will only get better. We have huge amounts of talent ready to shine!!!
