'A Day In The Life' Video
Students Learn Physics through Music!
to see first hand how some Poly students are learning complex physics concepts...through music!
Physics students at Poly are learning about sound waves and how many musical instruments produce different pitches by causing columns of air to resonate. For this "palm pipe" project students first collected data to develop a mathematical model for how the pitch/frequency produced by a pipe depends on its length. Working in groups they then selected a song and used their model to figure out what pipe lengths would be needed to play the notes in that song. In addition to learning about the physics of waves and resonance, they have to be precise in their measurements and have a good sense of music/rhythm in order to play the song well!

Alumni Corner: Gerrit Van Straten
Born and raised in Baltimore, Mr. Van Straten graduated from Polytechnic in June 1950. Having learned and enjoyed his time at Polytechnic, particularly such classes as welding, strength of materials and forge, Mr. Van Straten employed the problem solving techniques he learned at Poly to guide and advance his highly successful career at North American Aviation
. As he stated "whenever I solve a problem I start with Poly". Working in the assembly section, specifically on the A3J vigilanty fighter bomber project, he instantly recognized that the current method of using a lead hammer to shape a titanium part, was slow, basically ineffective and produced approximately 25% waste in material, excessive in his mind. Within a 6 to 8 month period, Mr. Van Straten designed a method and machine to improve this process. To read more about his incredible career and legacy, including his status as an honorary member of The Tuskegee Airmen,

*Sadly, Mr. Van Straten passed away during the compilation of this article. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones.
