The Past as a Foundation for the

Future of Public Health

What is the foundation for the work that we do as public health researchers, funders, advocates, practitioners, and stakeholders? We each bring our own experiences and perspectives to the work we do, but the future of public health needs to take into account the complex history of our country. We need to better understand how that history led to the policies, systems, and structures that shape our communities and the experiences of individuals. This history also impacts how research is conducted and what knowledge is valued. Our journey to advancing health and racial equity starts with looking to the past and carefully interrogating the present to inform the future.
