By Rev. Dr. Arthur Chang
Life’s blue-collar miracles are available to everyone. This is how we are able to transform our lives by thinking and doing. If we think of famous people throughout history, we will notice that they were guided by their thoughts and were committed to action. They did not simply rely on wishing to achieve their goals. “If wishes were horses, beggars would ride,” is not an empty proverb.
However, a wish can begin the process to fulfillment through activating the imagination. In this way, a wish may be linked to a dream that is energized to become a reality. Henry David Thoreau said, “If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now, put the foundations under them.”
To build a foundation, we need a plan, followed by action. The challenge is that many people merely wish and have given up on their capacity for regrouping and re-imagining new ways or new possibilities.
We might look at someone like Thomas Edison, the genius creator of such wonders as the phonograph, the Dictaphone, and the electric light bulb, and conclude that our efforts are inadequate because they don’t compare to his. However, most people who dream of new possibilities are not attempting deeds of such exceptional complexities, as did Edison. They are looking for things that are quite within their ability to do. It is conceivable that the kind of faith Edison had in his ability is what is lacking in people working at a much lower level of achievement, where they would achieve, nonetheless, a satisfactory level of success.
It is evident that succeeding at our lives has little to do with not having sufficient talent or intellect. Unless there is mental disease, everyone who desires a higher level of success can have it. This is the miracle of life available at the blue-collar level.
The process of creating our lives needs thinking and a commitment to do our part. This is the normal way of the blue-collar worker. Once we begin to believe in our possibilities, a strange thing happens; we start to see ways for moving forward and have a fired-up passion for doing it. It may not come as described in the Bible where things often happen instantaneously. Outside of the Bible, God seems to intend that we find our way without our Cosmic Parent forever holding our hands. Our freedom is in our independence.
The real joy is to realize that everyday people can accomplish amazing things, and there is nothing sweeter than verifying that God does help those to help themselves. This is the way of Life’s Blue Collar Miracle.

Converting Negatives into Positives

To the average person, when a result is obtained by this method of work [prayer treatment], it looks as though a miracle has happened, but such is not the case. It is only a miracle as everything else in life is a miracle. A definite, conscious idea has been set in motion in the Subjective World, which accepts ideas at their own valuation and tends to act upon them.

Ask for help

Sometimes it’s just not feasible to navigate the tricky anxiety, depression, isolation and trauma by yourself. For those who have underlying mental health conditions, for those who have experienced past traumas, for people on the frontlines in medicine, and for people who are lonely, this moment can be especially tough. But there are a number of free, confidential resources to turn to for help. Here are a few:
—Steinberg Institute website, links to mental health resources and care throughout California,
—Institute on Aging’s 24/7 Friendship Line (especially for people who have disabilities or are over 60), 1-800-971-0016 or call 415-750-4138 to volunteer.
—Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, 24/7 Access Line 1-800-854-7771, links to COVID-19 information.
—Mental Health Association of San Francisco 24/7 Peer-Run Warm Line, 855-845-7415.
—Fresno County Behavioral Health Warm Line, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., 559-600-WARM (9276).
—National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 1-800-273-8255 (TALK)
—The Crisis Text Line, Text “HOME” (741-741) to reach a trained crisis counselor.
