How deeply connected can science and religion be? Science deals with phenomena and religion deals with what is beyond phenomena—ontology, which is the essence of being or existence. We may even say science deals with the natural world and religion, the supernatural world.

If there can be a marriage between the two, it would be in the area of unchanging principles that guide both religion and science. There is, also, the connection that both psychology (science) and religion make regarding the impact of thought and emotions on experience. These have significant impact on health, relationship and success.

Psychology does not argue, as New Thought religion does, that the subjective mind makes things out of itself. Nor does it support that being totally positive is a sound way to be in every situation. Research indicates that people should be aware of the negative possibilities involved in their endeavors as they forge ahead toward their goals. For example, being positive should not let us think no one will rob us if we leave our doors open. Conversely, New Thought religions would argue that we must achieve a perfect faith in our prayers for them to work. This can be a tall order. How does one know that one has that level of faith? If the answer is we can demonstrate when we have that level of faith, how about those who can find no fault with their faith and do not demonstrate their prayers? Furthermore, countless numbers of folks, having little or nothing to do with the religious experience, succeed at living and become healed, not only people of faith.

Quantum science thinkers do not agree with the Classical Theism of Christianity that there is a substance from which the reality of the world is made. This is central to New Thought thinking. Quantum Science thinkers conclude reality, as we know it, is process. Process is the fact that every entity in the universe is forever coming into being and perishing. Our senses cannot detect it and the subtly of how this works is beyond the scope of this short article.

The human mind does not handle ambiguity well. Thus, we always seek closure in understanding our universe. Faith is the word of great closure. Whatever is not available to us, we will speculate and arrive at some conclusion of closure or faith whether it is the Mind behind creation or how thoughts work. Human knowledge, however, is in a progressive evolution. The ancients believed the sky was a dome, the earth was the center of the universe, that man is made uniquely in the image of God, and that the earth is flat. All these were faith statements based on assumptions of faith to provide a sense of closure that fostered security and control by means of our belief system.

Today, Classical Theism, based upon Plato’s acceptance of Parmenides substance theory, is rejected by our Quantum Science understanding. Prior to Parmenides, Heraclitus proposed a process reality that was largely ignored. Now we have come full circle by Quantum Science findings which are more resonant with Heraclitus’ thoughts than with the Parmenides/Plato connection.

What this will mean to New Thought is yet to be worked out. However, dogma is never a permanent answer to the unrelenting journey into the truth that will set us free.

We all look forward to the day when science and religion shall walk hand in hand through the visible to the invisible. Science knows nothing of opinion, but recognizes a government of law whose principles are universal. Yet any scientist who refuses to accept intangible values has no adequate basis for the values which he has already discovered. Revelation must keep faith with reason, and religion with law—while intuition is ever spreading its wings for greater flights—and science must justify faith in the invisible.

Ask for help

Sometimes it’s just not feasible to navigate the tricky anxiety, depression, isolation and trauma by yourself. For those who have underlying mental health conditions, for those who have experienced past traumas, for people on the frontlines in medicine, and for people who are lonely, this moment can be especially tough. But there are a number of free, confidential resources to turn to for help. Here are a few:
—Steinberg Institute website, links to mental health resources and care throughout California,
—Institute on Aging’s 24/7 Friendship Line (especially for people who have disabilities or are over 60), 1-800-971-0016 or call 415-750-4138 to volunteer.
—Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, 24/7 Access Line 1-800-854-7771, links to COVID-19 information.
—Mental Health Association of San Francisco 24/7 Peer-Run Warm Line, 855-845-7415.
—Fresno County Behavioral Health Warm Line, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., 559-600-WARM (9276).
—National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 1-800-273-8255 (TALK)
—The Crisis Text Line, Text “HOME” (741-741) to reach a trained crisis counselor.
—California Psychological Association Find a Psychologist Locator,
—Psychology Today guide to therapists,
Some psychologists will work with people for free or reduced rates, if needed, given the challenging times.
