By Rev. Dr. Arthur Chang
It is true that modern medicine does not have the answers to solving all illnesses. It is also clear that modern medicine does have the answers for COVID-19. Yet, a huge number of people remain unvaccinated despite the availability of effective vaccines. The nation may be facing Hamlet’s dilemma, “To be or not to be.”
A news report tells of a young California couple that died of COVID-19, leaving behind a 7 and a 2-year-old child and a newborn baby. The mother did not choose to be vaccinated because she was pregnant. The Father’s reason for not being vaccinated is unknown.
Currently, hospitals in several states where there are anti-vaccine policies in place are experiencing a new wave of infected people and the lack of adequate medical staff for treating patients with COVID-19. Not surprising to the medical profession, most of these patients are unvaccinated.
In our great country where viable options to avoid the terrible effects of COVID-19 exist, it seems that our belief system may lead to a future life or not.
The ancient words of Moses in the Book of Deuteronomy rings true as we face, once more, Shakespeare’s conundrum, “To be or not to be.” Moses said:
This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live… (Deuteronomy 30:19)
The vaccine choice offers life; the refusal of the vaccine offers suffering, at best, and death, at worst, to all our citizens—young and old.
I chose the vaccine. I hope that will be your choice to triumph over this virus and to protect others from being infected by you. Here, “Love your neighbor as yourself” is on good display.

Dr. Arthur's topic:

Success: The Blessing of Creativity

We are creative because we are purposive. Our purpose is to succeed at living and, by doing this, help others to be successful also. Creativity is such a relational gift. The more we help each other the more successful we will all be.

Suggestion has proved that the subconscious mind acts upon our thoughts. It is the mental law of our being, and the creative factor within us. It is unnecessary, at this point, to go into all the details of the Subjective Mind and its mode of action; it is enough to say that within us is a mental law, working out the will and purposes of our conscious thoughts. This can be no other than our individual use of that Greater SUBJECTIVE MIND, which is the seat of all mental law and action, and is ‘The Servant of the Eternal Spirit throughout the ages.’”

Ask for help

Sometimes it’s just not feasible to navigate the tricky anxiety, depression, isolation and trauma by yourself. For those who have underlying mental health conditions, for those who have experienced past traumas, for people on the frontlines in medicine, and for people who are lonely, this moment can be especially tough. But there are a number of free, confidential resources to turn to for help. Here are a few:
—Steinberg Institute website, links to mental health resources and care throughout California,
—Institute on Aging’s 24/7 Friendship Line (especially for people who have disabilities or are over 60), 1-800-971-0016 or call 415-750-4138 to volunteer.
—Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, 24/7 Access Line 1-800-854-7771, links to COVID-19 information.
—Mental Health Association of San Francisco 24/7 Peer-Run Warm Line, 855-845-7415.
—Fresno County Behavioral Health Warm Line, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., 559-600-WARM (9276).
—National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 1-800-273-8255 (TALK)
—The Crisis Text Line, Text “HOME” (741-741) to reach a trained crisis counselor.
—California Psychological Association Find a Psychologist Locator,
—Psychology Today guide to therapists,
Some psychologists will work with people for free or reduced rates, if needed, given the challenging times.
Founder's Practitioners are also available for prayer to address your needs. Call the church office for an appointment.
