We hope you had a safe 4th of July and that your family continues to be well!  And, happy 19th day of summer!!

We are extremely proud to share that we launched a one-month continuance of learning for each of our grade levels that was shared with families yesterday.  There is a section on our summer opportunities below for your convenience.  As a reminder, this is a self-paced program that keeps students active in last year's content and is completely optional.  In addition, we are also thrilled to safely welcome over 130 students into our summer daycare and preschool programs.  We have implemented a number of new protocols and practices that have allowed for these programs to reopen, and we are honored to be able to provide this option to our families.  Thank you to our ESP and CDC staff!

In addition, it is also not too late to take the 2020 Census.  The Census is such an important way for our communities to receive funding from the Federal government. There are resources below for your reference.

And if you are a family in need of food resources this summer, we strongly encourage you to sign-up for Summer Harvest, a local non-profit that distributes food throughout the summer.  There is a distribution this Saturday, July 11th, so read more below.

Lastly, we included our Reopening Schools Community Update #2 that was sent out to all families last week, as we have hundreds of community members who are also a part of our Constant Contact messages.   Please check your email regularly, as we will share ongoing updates on the progress we are making toward school reopening.  As stated in our previous communications, we have a goal to bring students and staff back to campuses in a more traditional setting, with students attending school daily, while also implementing a number of safety and cleaning protocols.

Thank you for all you did to support teaching and learning!!

Kindly,

Mark Johnson, Ed.D.
Superintendent

HIGHLIGHT: Summer Learning Resources
Summer Learning Resources

We are excited to share new Summer Learning Resources to help extend learning opportunities for our students.  FVSD's Summer Learning Resources are designed to allow students to independently engage in many of the online technologies that were used during School Dismissal.   The goal of these resources is to provide students with self-guided, structured learning activities for the summer in order to build a stronger bridge between the 2019-20 school year and the upcoming 2020-21 school year.  The resources feature online content in reading, writing, math, and overall student wellness.  There is no need to print out any packets and there are no in-person Zoom meetings.  Review resources are linked below.  Jump-start materials will be shared on August 10th.

DON'T FORGET: The 2020 Census is Happening Now
2020 Census

The 2020 Census is happening now!  The 2020 Census counts every person living in the United States and five U.S. territories. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Census results will determine congressional representation, inform hundreds of billions in federal funding every year, and provide data that will impact communities for the next decade.  The 2020 Census will provide a snapshot of our nation -- who we are, where we live, and so much more.  You can respond online, by mail or by phone.  And there is language support available.  Respondents can answer the form online in 13 languages and guides are available in 59 languages.  To respond to the 2020 Census, click here (Vietnamese / Spanish).

REOPENING SCHOOLS: Community Update #2
The below communication was shared with families last week and is included here for those community members not a part of our District contacts:

Dear FVSD Families:

With school beginning a little over 10 weeks away on September 9, 2020, we wanted to send our second update regarding FVSD schools reopening this fall.  As shared in our last update, our number one priority is to safely have all students back in traditional classrooms with their teachers every day.  However, if necessary, we must also be diligent in planning for the implementation of a blended learning program, as the COVID-19 pandemic is constantly changing and we may not be able to bring all students back every day.  A blended learning program allows for students to attend school physically for part of the week and attend 'virtually' on other days.  Additionally, we know from a recent survey that 22% of our parents would prefer a full-time distance/virtual learning model, which is another option we are building for this fall.

As we work to bring students and staff back to our campuses safely in September, we want to commend the efforts of our Reopening Schools Advisory, made up of over 55 stakeholders, including parents, teachers, support staff and administrators, who are working collaboratively to answer the hard questions about safety and protocols.  The topics below are guiding our intensive planning efforts and conversations, and will be included in our final reopening plan (intended to be completed by the first week of August).
  • Entering School Buildings
  • Transporting Students
  • Transitioning & Recess
  • Special Populations and Programs
  • Elementary School Program
  • Preschool & Childcare
  • Middle School Program
  • Maintaining Healthy Operations
  • Health, Hygiene, Protocols and Education
  • Considerations for Partial or Total Closures
  • Serving Meals
  • When a Student or Staff Member Gets Sick
In addition to the topics above, please know that reopening of schools will depend on all of these factors coming together successfully, and that our plan must also follow the guidance released by the California Department of Public Health and the Orange County Department of Education.

In true alignment with the FVSD Way, we have always known of the tremendous benefits of studying, collaborating, planning and communicating, all of which are necessary to reopen schools safely.  This approach, as well as our partnership with local health care officials and our neighboring districts, will allow us to develop the best model for our students, staff and our community.

Moving forward we will continue to provide ongoing and regular updates throughout the months of July and August, via email and on district/school websites.  On behalf of our Board of Trustees, and entire FVSD staff, thank you for your continued support and ongoing commitment to our students and our community.  Together we ensure that our students will continue to receive the necessary focus, resources, and attention they need to learn and grow even in these uncertain times.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message. I hope you and your families have a wonderful, and safe, 4th of July weekend!

Kindly,
Mark Johnson, Ed.D.
