Over the last several days, we have observed a powerful demand for justice within our country.  Protests across our nation have advocated for an end to racial inequality.  Fountain Valley School District remains deeply committed to creating a safe environment where our students learn to thrive in their community, and to engage in the difficult work to help make a world that is free of discrimination.  Collectively, we all play a critical role in creating a more just and caring world.

In FVSD, we embrace equity, diversity and inclusion. As educators, our job is to do more than teach content. We have a responsibility to teach and talk about injustices, to ensure students have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to build a better world, and to inspire them to be the change.  We must be relentless in our pursuit to learn about, understand, and embrace each other's differences so that we can create a better future for all. Together, we can provide opportunities for our children to be advocates and effect change through fostering environments where all members of our community feel welcome, valued, and heard.

Y our children may have questions about the images they are seeing on the news, videos they are witnessing on social media, and conversations they are hearing.   You can start by asking your child what s/he already knows about the recent events and what the events mean to her/him. Listen to your child's thoughts and provide a safe space for them to be able to ask questions and express their feelings.  To help with these conversations at home, please review the resources below.
With empathy and hope,

Mark Johnson, Ed.D.
Superintendent

Oka Elementary School is honored to celebrate teacher Emi Allen as Teacher of the Year!  Ms. Allen is a music teacher at multiple schools in our District, but as principal Erik Miller explains, "she exemplifies the excellence happening in our classrooms at Oka."  Every student at Oka between Kindergarten to fifth grade comes through Ms. Allen's classroom during the two days she is on campus.  During these moments, Ms. Allen not only connects with each classroom of learners, she also provides highly engaging and purposeful instruction.  In addition, she is able to simultaneously differentiate instruction for various students with unique needs.  As Mr. Miller continues, "...Ms. Allen possesses a unique blend of veteran classroom management and wisdom beyond her years, along with a youthful energy that connects with her students.  She has a level of humility and confidence that makes music truly magical for all students...Oka Elementary School is blessed to have Emi Allen as our music teacher and it is an honor to celebrate her as Teacher of the Year for 2020!"
