HIGHLIGHT: Textbook and Materials Adoption Community Input
Textbook and Materials Adoption Comm Input

During the 2019-2020 school year, Fountain Valley School District (FVSD) piloted new materials in the areas of TK-5th and 6th-8th grade science, and 6th-8th history.  In selecting the pilot programs, teams of teachers from all school sites and grade levels worked with coordinators from the Orange County Department of Education to select two vendors from the California State Board of Education approved materials list.  The first set of materials was piloted October, 2019 through January, 2020 and the second set of materials was piloted January, 2020 through April, 2020.  In the spring of last year, each team then reached consensus on one selection, and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a digital pilot of the selected materials was extended through December, 2020.

As part of FVSD Board Policy and Administrative Regulation 6161.1(a), we are conducting our community input process began on Friday, November 13th and will conclude on Monday, December 14th.  In support of the safety considerations due to COVID-19, we are proving both an in-person and virtual option for our community to preview the selected materials.

For more information and links to sign-up for an in-person reservation, and the links and password to access the virtual preview, please visit our website.

We want to thank all of the students and teachers who took part in providing input during the materials selection process, as well as everyone's patience in extending the process due to COVID-19.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us directly at [email protected].

Also during the December 17th Annual Organizational Meeting, we will welcome newly elected trustee Steve Schultz.  Mr. Schultz shared his feelings regarding election to the Board.  "It's a full circle moment to be a School Board Trustee of the same district I attended as a student. I feel blessed to get to team up with my fellow Trustees and work with our Superintendent, Dr. Johnson.  I'm grateful to the citizens of Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach for voting for me and allowing me to step in that sacred space where the dreamer meets the dream."  He will take the oath of office and join the Board of Trustees for his first meeting since being elected to office during the November 2020 elections.

The Annual Organizational Meeting will begin at 6:30PM on Thursday, December 17th.  Following the opening, Mr. Schultz and reelected Trustee Mrs. Galindo will take the Oath of Office.  We will then honor Mrs. Galindo and her term as president.  To join us online, please register here.
IMPORTANT COMMUNITY UPDATE: Join Us as We Celebrate #TheFVSDFamily!
In order to keep our community up to date on information and changes related to COVID-19, we want to once again share an important message that went out to all FVSD families last night:

In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and increase in case numbers throughout the state, Governor Newsom held a press conference today, Thursday, December 3, 2020, announcing a new Five Region Stay at Home Order that will be triggered when a region has less than 15% ICU bed capacity. The Southern California Region includes the following counties: Orange, Los Angeles, Imperial, Inyo, Mono, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura.  We are advised this could happen in the Southern California region in a matter of days, given the current trajectory of virus cases numbers and hospitalizations, according to the Governor.

We have received specific assurances from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), the Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA) and the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) that this order will not apply to schools that have already opened for in-person instruction and are following the CDPH COVID-19 safety guidelines. This means all FVSD schools will remain open, and our in-person instructional programs will continue.  Please click here to access the OCDE News Release, which includes a quote from Dr. Clayton Chou of the OCHCA.

State and local health officials have cited a large body of evidence that schools' health and safety measures, which include physical distancing, face masks, ventilation enhancements, smaller cohorts, timely contact tracing and notifications, and enhanced cleaning and disinfecting protocols have been effective in combating COVID-19. As a result, Dr. Ghaly, Secretary of California's Health and Human Services Agency, has said schools are not the source of the recent COVID-19 surges and continue to have low case and transmission rates and may remain open during the pandemic.

While the stay-at-home order will not alter our school operations, I want to encourage us all to personalize the overall message the Governor communicated today. The virus is spreading faster and farther throughout the state than it has since the pandemic began. We must come together as a community to take the necessary actions to counter the COVID-19 threat.

On behalf of our Board of Trustees and the entire FVSD Family, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to each of you for the patience, understanding, support, determination and grit you have demonstrated in working through the COVID-19 pandemic.  This is an extraordinary community of students, teachers, support staff and families who have worked together to ensure that our students' ongoing educational needs are met at the highest levels, and we should all take pride in what is being accomplished.

We will continue to provide you with regular updates as new information becomes available.
