District First Aid Derby

March 11, 2023

Join us on the morning of March 11, 2023 for the District's annual First Aid Meet.

Patrols representing Troops and Crews throughout the District can challenge the Scout's abilities to perform first aid in simulated real-life situations. The patrols will compete in practical first aid problems, working together to plan and perform hands-on first aid skills. And new this year, we will have two divisions, allowing Patrols to complete scenarios that appropriately challenge their skill levels.

The event will be on Saturday, March 11 from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon at St. Anastasia Church in Newtown Square. Every year we have dozens of Patrols compete to get their name on the prestigious Pennypacker Trophy (our very own version of the Stanley Cup); come join us and continue the tradition!

Cub Scouts, start your engines Pinewood Derby kits!

I hope all of our Cub Packs have made plans for their Pinewood Derbies this Spring. Trivia Night

March 4, 2023 at 6:00 pm

Our friends at the Baden Powell District are hosting a Trivia Night on the evening of Saturday, March 4 at St. Catherine of Siena in Horsham, PA. Support Scouting with a fun night of food, competition, and prizes. This is a BYOB event open to everyone 21 years or older, and questions will cover a wide range of topics that will have something for all.

This is a "Team Trivia" event, and we are looking to put together a Constellation District Table (or two). If you would like to join us, please register for the event here and then send an email to the Constellation District Chair, John Cluver, to let him know you are coming.

Merit Badge Opportunities

Every month, the Cradle of Liberty Council offers the opportunity for Scouts to take a merit badge that otherwise may be difficult to earn. Typically held on the third Saturday of the month, upcoming badges include Crime Prevention on February 25 and Chemistry on March 18.

As always, you can keep an eye on District and Council events at the Cradle of Liberty Council calendar, which provides information on events and links to register for them. Bookmark it in your favorite browser, then check it early and check it often!

District Safety Minute

Why does the Constellation District host a First Aid Derby every year? While it is a fun, competitive event, it also emphasizes the importance of basic First Aid skills. You may not ever need to splint a leg or fireman carry somebody to safety, but having the confidence of knowing how to respond in an emergency provides the ability to keep a situation from getting worse. A Scout knows that the first steps to handling an emergency, such as assessing the situation, calling for help, and approaching the scene safely are just as important as providing urgent treatment, and makes them an invaluable help in any emergency. Be prepared!

Fun Fact to Know

It is Presidents' Weekend, so it is only fitting to recognize Gerald Ford, the 38th President who earned the Eagle Scout award in 1927. He considered it one of the proudest moments in his life. About Scouting, he once wrote, "My early years as a Boy Scout were invaluable in helping to shape the course of my later life," and "I have seen firsthand evidence of the immeasurable worth of the basic values taught by scouting programs."
