July 25, 2022

We hope everybody has been having a great summer and has been taking advantage of all the great activities that Scouting has to offer.  Our District's Units have participated in Cub Scout Day Camps, Resica Falls and other Scout camps, and High Adventure Camps.  It's great to see a summer full of activity.  But summer also means it is time to start thinking about the Fall scouting calendar, so here are your Four Things To Know for the end of July!

  • Recruiting at National Night Out
  • Popcorn Sales
  • Instagram and Facebook
  • Membership Rates

Plus, Dates to Know and a new Fun Fact.

Recruiting at National Night Out

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. The Constellation District is helping our Units coordinate a recruiting event at events this year in Havertown, Marple, and Lower Merion.  Our units will be there to promote Scouting and provide information to families on how to join one of the Units in their area.  This year's event will take place on August 2 (August 9 in Lower Merion) and we're looking for Units to participate.  If your Unit is interested in recruiting at this event, please send a message to our Membership Chair, Maria Cengel, and she can let you know how you can help.

Popcorn Sales

Do you need a great fundraiser for your Unit?  Popcorn sales are beginning and will be on-going for the next several months.  Sales can be done in-person and on-line, creating lots of opportunities to raise the funds to support your Unit's activities.  30% to 40% of every sale goes directly to the Unit.

There are several things you can be doing now:

Popcorn is a great way to not only raise funds, but to teach Scouts life skills, including the value of earning their own way.

Instagram and Facebook

The District's social media presence has just gotten a little bit bigger. The Constellation District has started an Instagram feed to complement our Facebook page in showcasing our great activities. Follow us on one or both:

Membership Rates

Throughout the past several years, the BSA has worked to keep its national membership fee as low as possible. As you know, however, costs continue to rise, and the annual fee must be increased to address the fiscal realities we face to deliver a safe and quality Scouting program.

To ensure we have the resources to fulfill the promise of Scouting, the following national membership fee structure will take effect August 1, 2022.

$75 for Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing and Sea Scouts participants

$45 for Exploring participants

$30 for council-paid memberships

$45 for all adult volunteers (includes cost of background check)

$100 for a unit charter/affiliation fee

$25 one-time joining fee for new program participants in Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing and Sea Scouts (Not pro-rated)

$15 for Scout Life magazine (this is the first price increase since 2005)

This national membership fee helps cover the cost of essential services, including program resources, liability insurance for those participating in approved Scouting activities, criminal background checks, youth protection, and the development of intellectual property for national, council, and unit programs. As we move forward, we will continue to look at the membership fee structure and how we deliver the Scouting program for future generations.

Thank you for your understanding, together we will continue to provide a great Scouting program for our families.

Fun Fact to Know

Unami One is the local Lodge of the Order of the Arrow, Scouts "honor society."  Founded in 1915 at Treasure Island Camp, it was the first lodge of the OA and has led to a nation-wide organization involving thousands of Scouts and Scouters.  It has a long and storied past that you can read all about at its Lodge History website.

The Lodge is always collecting images and other information to supplement its archives.  Do you have anything of interest to share about Unami Lodge or Delmont Lodge 43?

You can write to them at:  history@unamilodge.org.
