Helga Vroom, one of RUCC’s eldest members, will give the message this Sunday. Helga will reflect on her soul’s journey as she journeyed from Nazi Germany to the United States. Full of love, passion, and zest, Helga will share poetry from her recent book of poems, Poetic Dwellings. Following the worship service, Helga will sell copies of her book and all proceeds will benefit the ministry of RUCC.

Reflection of the Week from the Racial Justice Team |
“The overthrow of Reconstruction [in the 1860s] was a stark reminder of the fragility of progress on voting rights. The second Reconstruction that began in the 1960s was marked by long, slow advancement that culminated in 2020, when Black voters turned out in record numbers to elect the state’s first Black and Jewish US senators. “After I finished crying, I was just so elated, that Georgia stands alone in the South,” said State Rep. Al Williams, who marched from Selma to Montgomery with John Lewis and was arrested 17 times during the civil rights movement. “A Jewish guy and a Black Baptist preacher—who would have ever thought it?”
But the vicious white backlash that has followed those victories—an attempt to overturn the election, an insurrection at the US Capitol, a record number of bills to restrict voting rights—has all the makings of a concerted attempt to end the second Reconstruction.
The means have changed and grown less violent, but the basic idea is the same: to couch voting restrictions in race-blind language to disenfranchise new voters and communities of color. Once again, the party of white grievance is rewriting the rules of American democracy to protect conservative white political power from the rising influence of new demographic groups. “Nobody’s putting in a literacy test, nobody’s putting in a poll tax,” says Yale historian David Blight. “But there are all kinds of ways for how to just restrict voting this time. Rather than utter disfranchisement, they are obviously going for: Knock off 5 percent of the Black vote, and you can once again win Georgia.”

As climate change brings more intense droughts, all of us—Californian or not—should take a good look at our water habits. Consider yourself pretty frugal? You might still be wasting more than you think.
Turn Off the Faucet During Tasks
Use Your Dishwasher — Properly
Using the dishwasher is more sustainable than handwashing in most cases, as dishwashers generally use less water than handwashing. Just make sure to only run your dishwasher with a full load, run it on the shortest cycle setting, don’t run the pre-rinse, and if possible, use an energy-efficient dishwasher.
Run Shorter Washing Machine Cycles
Similarly, wash clothes on the shortest cycle on your washing machine, make sure not to add an additional rinse cycle, and use cold water whenever possible. Avoid the permanent press cycle as well, as it uses both warm and cold water plus an extra rinse.
Change Up Your Shower Routine
Taking a long shower every day uses a lot more water than you think. According to Home Water Works, the average American shower lasts for 7.8 minutes and uses 15.8 gallons of water. You can reduce this amount by taking shorter showers, taking showers less frequently, or washing your hair less frequently.
Keep Water in the Fridge
If you find yourself constantly running the tap to get it to the perfect, icy-cold temperature, consider keeping a pitcher of water in the fridge so there’s always cold water on hand and you won’t need to run the tap.
Optimize Your Cooking Water
Boiling some vegetables? Opt for steaming instead, which only requires an inch or two of water. Even better — if you’re cooking rice or pasta, steam vegetables in a basket over the pot! Water used to steam vegetables can be saved, frozen, and added to soups. Or you can throw it on your plants
Cooking pasta? Use the smallest pot that will accommodate your noodles to ensure you don’t use more water than needed. Also, save some of the cooking water when you make pasta before draining it, and use the starchy water to bulk up sauces and soups.
Wash Your Clothes Less Often
While gym clothes, socks, and underwear should definitely be washed after each wear, any clothing that does not gather sweat, visible dirt, or anything else can probably be worn again before you wash it. We’ll leave the judgment calls here up to you.

This year’s theme is Emergence. As we come out of this period of quarantine, we will share our experiences with each other through storytelling, poetry, visual arts, and music. You won’t want to miss it!

Help Spread the Word About Covid-19 Vaccination |
While San Bernardino County Health officials have made a serious effort to get as many people vaccinated as possible, there remains a concern that the vaccination rate for African American males is lagging behind the rest of the population. A video aimed at encouraging African American men to get their “Fauci Ouchie” has been produced, and the Redlands Area Interfaith Council urges all churches to join in the effort.
Please share this information as appropriate: even if the folks surrounding an unvaccinated person are vaccinated, vaccination helps everyone avoid hospitalization or death due to Covid-19. We are all in this together – Please share this video:

Updates regarding COVID restrictions:
The Board approved:
- Resuming the Meditation Service (8:00am).
- In Person Choir practice without masks, if choir members are vaccinated.
- A small summer choir performing during service without masks (while singing), if choir members are vaccinated.
- Resuming indoor Sunday School with all participants masked and smaller numbers per room.
- Eliminating the requirement for social distancing during worship service.
- Resuming food with the outside fellowship time after church.
The Board decided that for now masks will continue to be worn for Sunday Services.
Our next Quarterly meeting is tentatively scheduled for July 25th.

Sunday School, and Youth Group Return to Indoor Classrooms this Sunday, June 27 |
On Sunday, June 27 our Sunday School and Youth Group classes will return to their indoor classrooms. (However, our Nursery remains closed at this time.) Please read the following protocols which we will follow whenever we meet indoors. Contact [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns.

Building Use Protocol During COVID-19
This protocol applies to RUCC staff, members, and friends for all Youth and Children’s activities that take place in the building.
•If you don’t feel well, for any reason, stay home. Do not enter the building.
•Wear a mask as you enter the building. Follow the CDPH guidance on the use of face coverings while in the building. If you arrive without a mask, cloth masks will be available.
•Practice good hand hygiene. There is hand sanitizer available at each entrance.
•Disinfecting supplies are available near the kitchen. Use as needed. There is no guarantee that surfaces are disinfected prior to your arrival.
•Disinfecting touchpoints after use is appreciated.
•Restrooms are available for use at your discretion.
•Participants are limited to the following capacity per each area, as follows:
Sanctuary - 100.
Fellowship Hall –50
Founders Room – 25
Micah Room – 15
Youth Room—10
Susi’s Sunday School Room—6
Club 345 Room—6
•Planning for worship and larger group events should be done in compliance with guidelines provided by the state, which are frequently updated.
•Notify Jill if you were in the building within 48 hours of the onset of COVID symptoms and you subsequently test positive. Jill will consult with volunteers familiar with the most recent State, County, and CDC guidelines and act accordingly.
