“The message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:18)
Dear People of Ascension,
Paul’s meditation on the paradox of the cross challenges me in these difficult days. As we witness- and perhaps experience- the abuse of state power, as protesters and helpers are murdered in the street, as immigrant neighbors are kidnapped with no pretense of due process and others fear to leave their homes, as children are separated from parents and held in jail, what is the message of the cross? When we feel so helpless, what is the power of God?
The message of the cross tells of God’s love for all people, and especially those most poor, marginalized, vulnerable and oppressed. It calls us to follow Jesus in the way of solidarity with these our siblings, recognizing the image of the divine in every person. The preaching of the cross does not say we will be comfortable or even safe in taking this path. It stands in radical conflict with the messages in the culture around us, and what we know about how to get ahead or protect ourselves or our institutions in this world. Those who speak truth to power, stand against state violence, and actively stand with neighbors in need may pay a price, and even an ultimate one as Jesus did. Even as we are seeing on the streets of Minneapolis.
But the gospel also says that in this way of non-violent, self-giving love we will find life. That life is the power of God’s love expressed through acts of mercy, kindness and solidarity- sometimes very small ones. It is grace extended when we are afraid, grieving, discouraged. Often, we discover that power within community, held up by others’ prayers when we cannot pray, or finding our actions multiplied and enhanced by the courage and gifts of others.
I realize that for many of us the foolishness of the cross, at least at this level, has seemed far away for much of our lives. Others- particularly those who are Black, or brown, or queer, or otherwise marginalized- have known this paradox intimately. It seems that we are at a time when many more of us must grapple with the impulse to stay safe, quiet and self-protective versus the gospel call to speak the truth about what we see, love our neighbor and do justice.
I am heartened by Paul's words, “God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.” May the foolish wisdom and vulnerable strength of Christ crucified guide us, sustain us and give us life.
Liz

A Prayer for Spiritual Communion
If you are attending any of our services online, we invite you to use this prayer at communion.
In union, O Lord, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. I remember your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection; I await your coming in glory. Since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.

Who Will Win the Golden Halo? You may have noticed the colorful poster hanging on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall, which means that Lent Madness 2026 is almost here! Participating in this annual tradition is a fun way to get to know new and familiar saints, and we are offering a chance to compete against your fellow parishioners for a prize by selecting your "Faithful Four" and the ultimate winner of the "Golden Halo." Pick one saint from each of the four quadrants on the chart, then pick the final two, and finally make your choice for the overall winner of the Golden Halo. Take a look at the poster and make your selections on the ballots provided at church from now through Ash Wednesday. For more information, go to lentmadness.org, and speak with John Grimes or Isabel Spencer for more details on the selection process.

Immigration Legal Support Fund – Recently our diocese announced a new Immigration Legal Support Fund to support immigrant families in our congregations and neighborhoods throughout the Diocese of New York. The Legal Fund will help those navigating immigration under urgent and vulnerable circumstances to access legal resources. We're starting with a $50,000 contribution from the Bishop’s discretionary funds. Help us to match this amount to keep families together. With your support, we can do more so that no one faces the system alone. Your contribution makes possible same-day response, family preparedness, limited-scope appearances, and urgent filings. You can contribute here. To learn more about the Immigration Legal Support Fund Click here.
