Free breakfast and lunch!

For the 2023-2024 school year, the State of California is mandating the Universal Meals Program at all schools in the state. With the Universal Meal families need to fill out a Meal Application form, which was part of the online registration package. SMUSD will be offering both breakfast and lunch. Please encourage your students to come and grab a free lunch and a free breakfast daily. SMUSD will be using the Point of Sale system to record the meals for lunch, therefore please remind your students to memorize their 5 Digit lunch number (student ID number). This will help expedite the meal service. For the first week of school the lines may be a bit longer than usual as students may have forgotten their lunch number. If you have any questions, please contact Munira Bengali at mbengali@smusd.us or 626-299- 7000 ext. 1323.

Student Connectedness to HMS Campus Life

HMS events, activities and athletics play a huge part in the overall development of our students. We want our students to stay connected to all the wonderful and interactive school events and activities that are available to each student. Students will be notified of school events and activities with a Schoology notification or an email to their student Gmail account. HMS students and families are also encouraged to frequently visit the HMS school website.

Reminders

Attendance:

Parents, the attendance online absence form on the school website is for explaining absences. If your child has a disagreement about an absence on a particular day/period, please reach out to the teacher first.

Late arrival/Early departure:

If your student comes late to school, even if it's 5 minutes late, the parent and the student need to check in at the front office. Your written confirmation needs to be documented and a slip is given to the student to present to the teacher.

Same process for picking a student up early from school. Parent must come in to the office, present ID and sign the student out, to ensure the student is going home with an approved guardian. Thank you for taking a few minutes to help us maintain correct attendance and safely monitor our student's whereabouts.

NO LUNCH DROP OFFS.

Complimentary breakfasts and lunches are available every day in the cafeteria.

Due to COVID restrictions we need to limit the number of visitors to school. If your child forgets his/her lunch, please do not bring it to him/her. They can eat from the cafeteria for the day. For the latest information please visit our SMUSD site here

Cell phones are not to be on or in student's possession from 8:00-2:50. Keep them POWERED DOWN and in the lockers.

Keep our campus clean:

Please remind your students to throw away their food wrappers/containers at snack break and lunch. Thank you for helping us keep our campus clean.

Textbooks/Chromebooks:

Students are responsible for the textbooks and Chromebooks they check out. If a textbook or Chromebook is damaged so it cannot be checked out anymore the student is responsible for the full price of the replacement, plus shipping and handling.

Computers may only be used in class at teacher's direction. Keep them locked in your lockers during lunch, away from the lunch areas and food.

Dear Fox Parents and Families,

With the new school year starting, we are launching our annual PTA membership drive. You are the “P” in the PTA, and without your support, Huntington Middle School would not be the outstanding school that it is. HMS PTA supports many programs at our middle school, such as Noontime Fun, Reflections art program, 6th grade dances, Career Day, Fox Games, and more! Joining our PTA is another way that you can support these programs and show the students in our school the importance you place on their education.

If you did not join HMS PTA during the online First Day Packet process before school started, then you can still join by filling out our PTA Membership Form and returning it to the HMS front office along with your check payable to HMS PTA, or you can pay via PayPal (instructions can be found here).  If you have any questions, please contact Daisy Wilson, PTA VP of Membership at dwilson@coastlinesteel.com.  Thanks!

46th Annual Los Angeles County Mock Trial Competition

High School and Middle School

The 46th Annual Los Angeles County Mock Trial Competition is fast approaching, and we need your help! Over 2,500 high school and middle school students will gather at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in November, eager to showcase their legal knowledge. However, we are currently facing a shortage of volunteer law students, attorneys and judges.

Volunteering is both easy and rewarding. Your role involves observing a trial, scoring the students’ presentations, and being amazed by their legal knowledge. You might also have an opportunity to preside over a trial. The time commitment is minimal, taking approximately 2.5 hours of your day.

Volunteers will receive:

Free parking

Light refreshments

Two units of MCLE credit (pending approval)

Here are the key dates:

- Thursday, Nov. 2 - Senior Division Round 1

- Monday, Nov. 6 – Junior Division Round 1

- Wednesday, Nov. 8 – Senior Division Round 2

- Monday, Nov. 13 – Junior Division Round 2

- Wednesday, Nov. 15 – Senior Division Round 3

Your participation is crucial to the success of this event. Please register as a volunteer today by clicking the button below and don't forget to share with your colleagues, bar associations and law school networks!

Finally, don't forget that Constitutional Rights Foundation is now "Teach Democracy"! New name, same great resources and programs. Please be on the lookout for emails from our new address @teachdemocracy.org.

Hope to see you next month!
