Tree falls in parking lot

At approximately 1:15PM the large tree located in front of the Barth Athletic Complex collapsed causing the south parking lot to be blocked. Thankfully no one was injured and only minor damages to 2 cars. The San Marino Fire Department and San Marino Police Department quickly responded to secure the area. Arborists and tree removal services also promptly responded to dismember the tree and remove it as quickly as possible.

March is Women's History Month

ASB would like to share 3 examples of extraordinary women from history.

Florence Nightingale, born May 12, 1820, is best known for the modernization of nursing and medicine.

She organized corps of nurses to treat wounded soldiers on both sides in wars such as the Crimean War. Nightingale was also a key figure in the American Civil War, giving frequent advice to how to treat soldiers while in conflict.

Quote : “How little can be done under the spirit of fear.”

Catherine the Great

was the most successful reigning Empress of Russia, fostering the Russian enlightenment under her rule. With a counsel of successful nobles and generals, she expanded Russia through conquest and diplomacy, crushing conflicts with their military might. The Empress also during her time, settled Alaska after its discovery by Russian explorers.

Quote : “I beg you to take courage; a brave soul can even mend disaster.”

Queen Elizabeth

was the 2nd female monarch of England.

She was known for her intellect, and one of the first monarchs to appoint a counsel of trustworthy advisors. During her time on the throne, which was a stable 44 years, English drama and art flourished. She also united the nation and cemented the

British Isles as a major

European power.

Quote : “A fool too late bewares when all peril is past.”

Renovation Plans for San Marino Center

The San Marino City Council approved a renovation project for the San Marino Center and contracted with CABD Construction to bring the building up to code, match the decor of the neighboring Crowell Public Library, and make it a usable, flexible, and modern community center facility. Construction is anticipated to begin in mid September with demolition sometime in October. Construction activities will affect parking. Please see attached for the SM Center Project parking collaboration with the City of San Marino for details. The yellow parking area is first come first serve. Free breakfast and lunch!

For the 2022-2023 school year, the State of California is mandating the Universal Meals Program at all schools in the state. With the Universal Meal families need to fill out a Meal Application form, which was part of the online registration package. SMUSD will be offering both breakfast and lunch. Please encourage your students to come and grab a free lunch and a free breakfast daily.  SMUSD will be using the Point of Sale system to record the meals for lunch, therefore please remind your students to memorize their 5 Digit lunch number (student ID number). This will help expedite the meal service.  For the first week of school the lines may be a bit longer than usual as students may have forgotten their lunch number. If you have any questions, please contact Munira Bengali at [email protected] or 626-299- 7000 ext. 1323.

Student Connectedness to HMS Campus Life

HMS events, activities and athletics play a huge part in the overall development of our students. We want our students to stay connected to all the wonderful and interactive school events and activities that are available to each student. Students will be notified of school events and activities with a Schoology notification or an email to their student Gmail account. HMS students and families are also encouraged to frequently visit the HMS school website.

Health Information

COVID-19 Information

Starting Tuesday, 11/15/22, employees, parents, and students may pick up free COVID rapid test kits (2 kits/4 tests) from the School Health Office in advance of and for a safe return from the Thanksgiving holiday. https://smusd.info/freetests2022

Please visit the SMUSD COVID-19 Information page.

Reminders

Attendance:

Parents, the attendance online absence form on the school website is for explaining absences. If your child has a disagreement about an absence on a particular day/period, please reach out to the teacher first.

Late arrival/Early departure:

If your student comes late to school, even if it's 5 minutes late, the parent and the student need to check in at the front office. Your written confirmation needs to be documented and a slip is given to the student to present to the teacher.

Same process for picking a student up early from school. Parent must come in to the office, present ID and sign the student out, to ensure the student is going home with an approved guardian. Thank you for taking a few minutes to help us maintain correct attendance and safely monitor our student's whereabouts.

NO LUNCH DROP OFFS.

Complimentary breakfasts and lunches are available every day in the cafeteria.

Due to COVID restrictions we need to limit the number of visitors to school. If your child forgets his/her lunch, please do not bring it to him/her. They can eat from the cafeteria for the day. For the latest information please visit our SMUSD site here

Cell phones are not to be on or in student's possession from 8:00-2:50. Keep them POWERED DOWN and in the lockers.

Keep our campus clean:

Please remind your students to throw away their food wrappers/containers at snack break and lunch. Thank you for helping us keep our campus clean.

Textbooks/Chromebooks:

Students are responsible for the textbooks and Chromebooks they check out. If a textbook or Chromebook is damaged so it cannot be checked out anymore the student is responsible for the full price of the replacement, plus shipping and handling.

Computers may only be used in class at teacher's direction. Keep them locked in your lockers during lunch, away from the lunch areas and food.

HMS PTSA 2022-2023

SPRING ALLOCATIONS

The HMS PTA volunteers work hard each year to raise money to help fund academics, arts, athletics, and activities at HMS that the school and District are unable to financially support. It is the responsibility of the PTA to spend these funds in a manner that will benefit the greatest number of students, enhance their middle school experience, and help make HMS the best it can be. These funds are limited and the amount changes from year to year based on the dollars raised. PTA accepts applications for grants from HMS faculty, staff, students, and parents.

The APPLICATION DEADLINE is Friday, March 31, 2023, by 4:00 pm. Applications received after this time will not be considered. Submit all applications to Sri Abboy at [email protected].

ALL REQUESTS MUST BE COMPLETE! Any form not entirely completed will be denied. Detailed information regarding costs, shipping, tax, and the vendor is required. Please provide as much information as possible so that the committee can give your request proper consideration. Per SMUSD audit and accounting protocol, items cannot be purchased from international vendors.

The Allocations Committee will present their recommendations to the PTA Executive Board and then to the PTA members who will vote at the Association Meeting.

Please note that all items purchased to become the property of SMUSD and will be periodically inventoried.

If you have questions, please contact Sri Abboy at 626-999-3995 or [email protected].
