Foxgloves are some of our favourite plants, flowering in early summer at a time before the rest of the garden has really got into full swing. They are easy to raise from seed and June and July are ideal months to get sowing to ensure you have some of these cottage garden icons in your gardens early next summer.
The seeds can be sown directly into your flower beds or in trays. Water the compost first and then sprinkle the tiny seeds on top, pressing them in lightly – you don’t need to cover as they like a bit of light to germinate. They prefer a temperature of 15-20°C so they will be fine outside but don’t place in direct sun where they may get too hot and emerging seedlings might sizzle! The seeds will germinate within 2-3 weeks. You can prick-out the seedlings when they’re big enough to handle and grow on in pots; these can be planted out in early autumn where you want them to flower. If sowing directly, the seedlings will need thinning out to around 30cm apart to give the plants enough space to grow. Next June you can stand back and admire the results!
