FRANCISCAN FEDERATION OF THE SISTERS AND BROTHERS OF THE UNITED STATES
January 2022 | Volume 1, No. 5
Message from the Co-Presidents
Continued New Year Blessings to you! Please continue to follow our progress through our monthly National Board Briefing and plan to participate in our in-person AFC, June 3-6, in Pittsburgh. This inter-active Conference needs your wisdom and your voice. The national conversations now underway through the McLaren Zoom sessions will be continued at the Conference and lead us into the Franciscan Renaissance waiting for a new birth!

We also acknowledge with gratitude, the artists who submitted images for our 2022 AFC logo. Sister Jan Reisdorf, OSF, Rochester, MN Franciscan, submitted the logo we selected and which you see at the end of our Briefing. Thank you, Jan, for bringing life to our theme: Hearts on Fire: Journeying Together.
Conversations on the Franciscan Renaissance
The January 5th Zoom on Brian McLaren’s “A Franciscan Renaissance: Needed, Costly and Within Reach” was an “AHA!” moment for almost 80 participants. His powerful words are inspirational and continue to challenge us to bring forth Franciscan Renaissance formed in the spirit of Saints Francis and Clare. Jackie Mosel captured it well: “The challenge is clear, “we” need to open our hearts wider and invite/include all Franciscan women and men in this spiritual movement/renaissance, vowed and secular, young and old, as soon as possible.”

There are two more opportunities to engage in a dialogue on Brian McLaren’s presentation. They are scheduled for Thursday, February 10, 2022, from 4:00-5:30 PM and Monday, Sunday, March 6, 2022, from 6:00-7:30 PM (Eastern Time). If you have not registered click here. Both the video and script of the presentation is available on the Franciscan Federation website.
Update from the Transformational Task Force
The Transformation Task Force is currently working on proposals for changes to the various commissions/committees of the Federation. The Task Force collaborated in creating a set of proposed changes for each of the following:

  • Commission of Charism Services
  • Commission of Elected Leaders
  • Commission of Regions
  • Finance Committee
  • Peace and Justice Committee

Each of the commissions/committees is reviewing the proposals from the Task Force. Once the proposals have been edited to reflect input from the groups, the TTF will share them with the board. After board review these proposals will be sent to the Federation members for consultation. A specific consultation with the Commission of Elected Leaders will be included. By means of this process we hope to have final versions of the proposals approved prior to the Assembly and ready for a final vote during the Assembly.

Work on revisions to the board structure will take place once a new Executive Director is named. It is the belief of the TTF that this officer can assist with the work involved in changes to the board – and resulting by-law changes needed for all the transformation initiatives.
