December 2025

Welcome back from Thanksgiving! I hope everyone returns fortified for the rest of the semester.

In a short week, I was delighted by two meaningful events on campus.

Queens College is fortunate to have 14 CUNY Distinguished Professors on the faculty. On Monday, November 24, I enjoyed lunch with many of them. The extraordinary range of their research accomplishments and current projects is inspiring. The conversations, as you would expect, were scintillating.

New York State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (below 6th from the left), chair of the Committee on Higher Education, came to QC to present a “pen certificate” to representatives of the CUNY Coalition for Students with Disabilities (CCSD). A pen certificate is a ceremonial document commemorating a legislative act. In this case, it symbolizes the new state law she sponsored extending certain provisions relating to publishers or manufacturers providing instructional materials for college students with disabilities. Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Jennifer Jarvis joined representatives from CUNY and the QC Student Association in expressing appreciation to Senator Stavisky.

Congratulations to our men’s soccer team, who had four players named to the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) All-East Region Team—a program record for the most selections. Forward Bradyn Brown, midfielder Andrew Johnson, and defender Tommy Wagner were each selected for the First Team, while forward Miguel Soto Gonzalez was a Second-Team selection.

Our winter sports have gotten underway with both the men’s and women’s basketball teams playing several games so far. Winter track also begins this week, so be sure to get out and support our Knights’ teams. Schedules and news can be found on our athletic website.

The history of CUNY is inseparable from the histories of New York City and New York State. Members of the QC community can learn about it on Thursday, December 4, at 4 pm, when At Home with Queens College Program is excited to present a Zoom lecture, CUNY 101: Behind the Scenes. The speaker, Vice President for Communications and Marketing and Senior Advisor to the President Jay Hershenson, will cover the origins of CUNY, the fiscal crisis of the 1970s, and the real story of the current CUNY state law. Register for the Zoom session here.

Talented student performers and choreographers will be showcased in Arise: The 2025 Fall Dance Concert, December 4-7. The program will also feature Bessie-award nominated flamenco dancer Xianix Barrera, a CUNY Dance Initiative Artist in Residence at Queens College, in a new work.

On Friday, December 5, from 10 am to 2 pm, the Office of Institutional Effectiveness will hold its second annual Assessment Showcase in the Student Union, 4th floor ballroom. Excellence in Assessment Awards will be presented to an academic department or program and to an administrative unit.

Thanks to the efforts of many people, Queens College is gaining greater media presence. The “Here and Now” episode (QView 216) taped live at LeFrak Concert Hall on Thursday, November 13, will be aired by WABC-Channel 7 on Sunday, December 7, at noon.

CUNY-TV is running a new story on Quinceañera: Dress and Memory in Latine Culture at the Godwin-Ternbach Museum. If you haven’t seen Quinceañera yet, there’s still time; the show will be on display through December 18.

The Queens College episode of “The College Tour” has begun streaming on Amazon Prime Video HERE (S15 E4). QC is the first CUNY school to be included in this series, which introduces viewers to colleges and universities around the world through student narratives.

The ten students featured in that “College Tour” episode emphasize and personify QC’s diversity. As it happens, linguistic diversity is one of the reasons U.S. Poet Arthur Sze chose this campus as the site for his first official appearance, on Monday, December 8. I’ve already reserved my seat for “Words Bridging Worlds: On Poetry and Translation,” when Sze will read from his work and discuss translation with a fellow poet, CUNY Distinguished Professor and NYS Poet Laureate Kimiko Hahn (English). It’s the first time that both the official national and statewide poets will be presenting at CUNY. Hope to see many of you at this important college event.

Everyone is a Nutcracker fan in December. New York Theatre Ballet will take to the Colden Auditorium stage on December 13, at 3 pm, with a one-hour child-friendly version choreographed by Keith Michael, former manager of dance production at the Juilliard School.

The next day at 4 pm, the Queens College Choral Society will present its 85th annual winter concert in collaboration with musicians from the Louis Armstrong House Museum and students in Aaron Copland School of Music’s jazz program. They’ll be performing Duke Ellington’s The Best of the Sacred Concerts.

Since this newsletter will go on hiatus until next semester, I’d like to take this opportunity to inform you about our annual commemoration of the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. QC will celebrate Dr. King’s legacy on January 18 with a program featuring a keynote by Emmy-award winning television journalist, author, CUNY TV host, and longtime human rights activist Carol Jenkins and the debut of the sixth installment in the original video series documenting the college’s connections to the civil rights movement. Haitian-American jazz vocalist Tyreek McDole will perform. The celebration is co-sponsored by our esteemed Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. It has become a signature New York City event. My special thanks to the planning committee co-chaired by Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities and Interim Chief Librarian Simone Yearwood and Dean of Diversity and Chief Diversity Officer Jerima DeWese.

I’ll close by wishing students good luck on their final exams, thanking faculty and staff for your ongoing support of student success, and expressing gratitude to all of our alumni supporters, donors, and friends of the college. I extend to all of you the happiest holiday greetings. Stay healthy and safe!
