The Ohio Board of Pharmacy has received reports of coordinated efforts involving fraudulent prescriptions intended for opioid medications, specifically oxycodone.
This organized criminal network has primarily targeted pharmacies located within grocery stores in Akron, Canton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, and Sandusky. This group generally uses young women to pass the fraudulent prescriptions. When asked to present identification, they often present out-of-state drivers licenses.
Some common aspects of this fraudulent scheme include:
- The patients (suspects) will walk up and present the fraudulent prescriptions.
- All fraudulent prescriptions are computer generated on prescription paper as opposed to electronic prescribing or by fax.
- Prescriptions are mostly for oxycodone, specifically strengths of 10mg or 30mg.
- Quantities are either 60 or 80.
- Patients have no profile or have never filled with the dispensing pharmacy.
- There is no OARRS history reported for each patient.
- Prescriptions are presented by a female who is not the patient.
- Suspects are paying with cash and in combination with a discount card.
Extra caution should be exercised when these conditions are present. Personnel who encounter this or similar groups should notify local law enforcement immediately and contact the Ohio Board of Pharmacy as soon as practicable.
