Frederic Magnien
Burgundy's Biodynamic Wizard
| |
|
Frédéric Magnien is widely regarded as one of the shrewdest and sharpest young winemakers working in the Côte d'Or today.
His father Michel Magnien is a well-respected vigneron who produces wine in his own right, as well as being responsible for the vineyard management of Maison Louis Latour.
Frédéric Magnien is the fifth generation of his family in Morey-St-Denis.
Having worked with his father after wine school, and then travelled to work with Pinot producers in California and Australia, Fréderic rejoined his father in 1993 and two years later created his own négociant label, which has proved one of the recent success stories in Burgundy.
Frédéric has no vineyards - his talent lies in sourcing fruit from small holdings from the best plots in the finest vineyards.
When he started out, he had many contacts through his father and he has now built up a network of growers in Morey-St-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin, and Chambolle-Musigny.
In the winery, Frédéric adopts a hands-off approach as much as is practically possible, enabling each wine to display its individual vineyard origins.
His wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered and are as modern as the presentation, with flamboyant labels on turbo-charged bottles: enormously to the taste of some consumers but less so to others.
There’s no question that Magnien knows every nook and cranny of Burgundy by heart.
As a child, he used these vineyards as his off-road bicycle course, riding through premier and grand cru plots.
As a winemaker, Magnien still rides his bike through the fields to greet growers at first light; his are long-lasting partnerships based on trust and respect.
Magnien has also fruther refined the role of négociant given his tight connections to growers in Burgundy.
His long-standing relationships involve his own teams tending vines according to organic and biodynamic practices throughout the growing season, During the harvest, it is also his teams who cut grapes by hand and transfer them carefully to his cellar in Morey-Saint-Denis.
This level of attention means quality is assured from field to bottle, and makes his small-batch wines the treasures that they are.

Located in south of Dijon, the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation is the top village of the Côte de Nuits.
In 1847, by royal order of King Louis Philippe, the name Chambertin was attached to Gevrey and officially became Gevrey-Chambertin.
The "Lavaut-Saint-Jacques" climate is located west of the village of Gevrey Chambertin, along the road that enters the Mountain to lead to the Combe Lavaut.
Its origin comes from "Val" which in the Middle Age meant, apparently, a relief.
Above the village proper, ‘Lavaux Saint-Jacques’ faces southeast at the mouth of the Gevrey combe, or valley. Vines here feed directly from Burgundy’s mother rock of limestone, a few inches from the surface.
One of Gevrey’s more noble and structured premier crus.
There is a whiff of herbal tea to the cooler and more restrained aromas of red and dark currant, newly turned earth and game hints.
There is excellent energy and focused power to the muscular medium-bodied flavors that are even more mineral-driven before culminating in a youthfully austere, serious and very much built-to-age finale.
This is very good and a class Lavaut.
North of the village, ‘Lavaut Saint-Jacques’ (also spelled as Lavaux) faces southeast at the mouth of the Gevrey “combe” or valley.
Burgundy’s “mother rock” of limestone is just inches from the surface.
Fermented on indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled tanks.
Aged in older barrels and clay jars.
Unfined and unfiltered.

Well-placed, it sits just under premier cru ‘Suchots’ and is a stone’s throw from the border of grand cru Clos du Vougeot.
A true insider’s Vosne and one that well outshines its villages status.
A great bottle for the cellar, and a value to boot.
Aromas of purple flowers, red summer berries, light spice.
Earthy yet refined; fine-grained tannins.

First mentioned as far back as 1120, fourteenth century Morey was a place of asylum for Cistercian monks who appeared to have possessed numerous vineyards and even a winery by 1306.
The appellation extends from Chambolle-Musigny to Gevrey-Chambertin and covers around 148 hectares, 80% of which are planted with grapes for red wines.
Ruchot indicates a place which contains rocks. In the south of the village at the border with Chambolle, ‘Ruchots’ sits just under grand cru monopole Clos de Tart and grand cru Bonnes Mares.
The vineyard’s location in a small valley means cooler winds from the north inspire a special microclimate, allowing a slower, longer ripening.
Soils are thin and iron-rich; subsoils are pure “mother rock” limestone.
Ripe dark berry aromas combine with cool, pretty and ripe earth, spice and soft floral nuances.
The round, seductive and attractively textured flavors possess a plush mid-palate that retains a reasonable sense of precision on the youthfully austere, moderately firm and sneaky long finale.
Lovely and very Ruchots.
Magnien selects fruit in ‘Ruchots’ that grows at the top of the slope, bordering grand crus Clos de Tart and Bonnes Mares.
Its location in a small valley means cooler winds from the north allow a slower, longer ripening.
Fermented on indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled tanks.
Aged in older barrels and clay jars.
Unfined and unfiltered.

There are two potential origins to the name Nuits-Saint-Georges.
The first is said to have come from Nux, meaning "nut" in Latin.
The other is said to be Nuithon, a barbarian tribe associated with the Burgundy people.
In 1680, Louis 14th, suffering from a digestive disorder, was advised by his doctor to drink a glass of Nuits-Saint-Georges every day.
The appellation extends over 175 hectares and produces wines with good structure that age extremely well.
A selection from four parcels, with an average vine age of 50 years.
‘Aux Allots,’ ‘Aux Saints-Juliens,’ ‘Aux Tuyaux’ and ‘Aux Herbues’ are all on the Vosne side of the village, giving this wine a touch of Vosne purple nobility with a whole lot of earthy, Nuits intensity.
A lovely wine and a surprise treasure for the cellar.
