Growing Camellias in Houston

At Maas we have 35-40 varieties of camellias that grow well in this area.  Some people are afraid of camellias.  They are actually EASY to grow here. Camellias with proper care are one of the best plants for fall, winter and spring color. Come join Jim Maas as he talks about camellias and how you can make them a beautiful color spot for you yard.

In this class you will plant  a 1 gallon camellia plant and several annual flowers in a decorative ceramic pot. During your class you will also receive valuable instruction on how to care for camellias and get the most out of these beautiful plants with exceptional blooms. We'll be talking about where to grow them, sun or shade, how to trim, fertilizing, watering, insects and pests.  

 

The class fee is $40 plus tax. You will be taking home that day a camellia in a decorative ceramic pot. It is $50 worth of items for $40. You will receive 20% off all camellia plants you buy that day. Bring gloves if you want to keep your hands clean. We will be digging in the dirt!

You really CAN grow your own fruit and we'll help you learn how.

  

Jim Maas will talk about growing fruit trees in our area. He will discuss growing citrus such as lemon, lime, grapefruit, orange, and kumquat. And of course all of our favorites - apple, peach, plum, mango, pomegranate, persimmon, avocado trees and more. Find out about selecting, planting, pruning, and harvesting. Remember, Maas Nursery sells only varieties that do well in this area. Come on out for lots of fun and information!

Maas Nursery invites you out to a special seminar on a new way of vegetable gardening, Square Foot Gardening. Andy Chidester of Lady Bug Natural Brands will present the seminar.

 

Andy is an avid gardener, especially vegetables and has worked in the garden industry for 13 years. She is a member of the Master Gardeners of Bexar County and is a certified Square Foot Gardener.


Square-foot gardening concept is simple: Build a raised bed, space divided into one square-foot section, and then plant vegetables and/or flowers. The advantages include reduced workload, less watering, easy weeding and easy access to your crops. This is a great way to learn to grow some of your own food. .


This interesting approach to natural gardening features vegetable gardening in compact gardens where the plants are grouped tightly together. It concentrates water and good soil in a tight form th


Andy will present this seminar on Saturday, February 16th from 10-11:30 am. Coffee and refreshment will be served.
at isdesigned to maximize water efficiency and nutrients. It employs a kind of companion gardening where plants are placed next to each other in a way designed to maximize their benefit to each other. Proponents of the approach say it grows a lot more food with a lot less resources.
