Proper Pruning Tips
Prune your plants during the right time so they look attractive and well-formed.
Spring Blooms: Prune after blooming.
Summer Blooms: Prune in the dormant season.
Overgrown Plants: Prune by several feet or close to the ground in early spring (late February to March). Don't prune in the fall or winter or it'll cause the plants to have a barren appearance until spring and make them more susceptible to cold injury.
You can prune most broad-leafed ornamentals, such as ligustrums, hollies, crape myrtles, and cleyera; however, boxwoods recover slowly and can die due to severe pruning. Don't prune narrow-leafed evergreens, like junipers, Leyland cypress, and arborvitaes, since they don't regenerate new growth and can die.
