About The Institutes

The percentage of students with ASD spending at least 80% of their day in inclusive classrooms has increased 244% in a 10 year span. To meet this demand, educators need additional information about how to address the unique instructional needs of students with ASD in inclusive settings.

Fall/Winter Sessions:

Autism Endorsement: The Foundations and Characteristics of Autism

In the 2017-2018 Professional Development Institutes, Participants will receive an overview of the foundations and characteristics of autism including diagnosis, co-morbid conditions associated with autism spectrum disorders, special education laws and the unique characteristics of autism as related to communication, social/emotional development, behavior, sensory processing, cognition, and learning. It is geared toward those seeking the Autism Endorsement. Up to 67.5 hours may be used toward the endorsement.

This institute is funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and is offered at no charge to educators.

Audience  

All K-12 special and general educators including specialists, building/program administrators, and related service providers working in a public school in Massachusetts. 

Dates and Locations:

There are two sessions to choose from. Session 1 will meet in Worcester and Session 2 will meet in Watertown. This is a hybrid online program that will require some live online class attendance, some self paced instruction as well as a live face to face attendance midway through the program and again for a final presentation. Each session will last for 12 weeks. Live online classes will meet from 6:30 - 9:00pm. Please review all dates before applying.

Session 1: Online Classes will meet live on 9/27, 10/11, 10/25, 11/8 & 11/29
or
Session 2: Online Classes will meet on 2/7, 2/21, 3/7, 3/28, 4/11, 4/25

Additional Time Commitments

There is a follow up face to face day part way through each session to discuss content and work in small groups on projects from 9am-3:30pm.
Session 1 day is Wednesday, November 14, 2018 in Watertown @ Worcester State
Session 2 day is Monday, March 18, 2018 @ 51 Water St
There will be an additional follow-up day to present their final project conclusions from 9am-3:30pm.
Session 1: Follow up day is January 28, 2019 in Watertown @ Worcester State
Session 2: Follow up day is May 13, 2019 @ 51 Water St .
Participants will also engage in an online discussion forum throughout each session using Google Classroom.

SPECIAL NOTE : In order to attend this institute and receive the 3 graduate credits or 67.5 PDPs, Participants must attend all dates and follow up sessions of the Institute, complete a pre-test, a post-test, and a survey of the Institute content, and complete all Institute projects and assignments. Graduate credits are from Fitchburg State University at a fee of $295 No partial credits will be given.
