Happy Disability Pride Month

Eden I&R joins communities around the nation in recognizing July as Disability Pride Month. This is an opportunity to celebrate the many ways that people living with disabilities—whether visible or invisible, mobility or cognitive, vision or hearing, learning or sensory, developmental or acquired—add to the diversity and strength of our state.

Observed in July, Disability Pride Month marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a major civil rights milestone signed into law on July 26, 1990. The ADA prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, removing barriers to employment, transportation, public services, and other critical areas.

To honor Disability Pride Month, the Alameda County library curated a list of books with disability representation and written by disabled authors that you can check out here.

Partner Spotlight - East Bay Innovations

In honor of Disability Pride Month, we are featuring East Bay Innovations as our partner spotlight. Established in 1994, East Bay Innovations (EBI) is a private non-profit organization providing services to people throughout Alameda County. Though EBI began as a small Supported Living agency, it today offers a variety of services that support more than 500 individuals with disabilities to live as independently as possible in their own homes, to be successfully employed, and to feel a sense of membership in their community.

For more information about East Bay Innovations' work in the community, visit their website.

Caller Stories

A Castro Valley mother of a five-year-old son called 211 because she was experiencing homelessness and food insecurity. Her priority need was finding food for herself and her son. She asked if 211 could help her find food pantries near her in Castro Valley. Luckily, our 211 staff referred her to the Salvation Army-Hayward Corps, the Community Child Care Council of Alameda County, and the food pantry at the Davis Street Family Resource Center to help with food.
