June, 2019 - In This Issue:
From the Desk of Our Executive Director

With Memorial Day behind us -- as well as a quite intense heat wave -- it's safe to say that it is officially summer. With that in mind, I encourage you to fully embrace this season and everything it has to offer you and your family.

Take advantage of more hours of daylight; reduced, more commuter-friendly traffic; school breaks, allowing for flexibility for day trips or more distant travels; or just a break from your regular routine.  When we take time to rest and rejuvenate, we return with increased stamina, clarity of thought and effectiveness.

Ironically, for many of us, it takes discipline to actually relax, unplug and enjoy life with our families or on our own. But I encourage you to make that effort.  Alameda County has lovely places for a refreshing walk: Lake Merritt, San Leandro Marina, Lake Chabot or Lake Elizabeth, just to name a few. For family adventures, consider visiting Oakland Zoo or Sulphur Creek

San Francisco's Academy of Sciences currently has a wonderful exhibit: Skin: Living Armor, Evolving Identity, that I know you'll enjoy.

If you can't get away, simply reading a book can be a great escape. Many of us read to our children every day, but we've forgotten the pleasure of reading for our own enjoyment. Take some time to pick up a book -- read and feel the pages in your hands. Or listen to an audible book, it's like story time for grown-ups!

In these days of constant stimulation, we should also practice the art of doing nothing. Whether you choose to stay busy with friends and family or do nothing at all, on behalf of the staff at 4Cs, we wish you a pleasant and refreshing summer season.

Be well,
Renee S. Herzfeld
