Two Kids Nights at Burke Lake Park - This year I am again partnering with Celebrate Fairfax to bring you two family fun events right before the concerts on July 12^th and 19^th. These Celebrate Fairfax @ Springfield Nights family fun nights will start at 5pm and run until the concert begins at 7PM. Last year we had caricature drawings, a balloon artist, a mad science show, magic tricks, games and even some famous guests who stopped in (see below). We are planning even more for this year! I hope you and your kids come to enjoy the fun before you settle in for the shows on July 12^th and 19^th. I’ll have more updates for you on Celebrate Fairfax @ Springfield Nights as we get closer to July.

Bike to Work/School Day this Friday, May 19^th at the West Springfield Government Center

Each year, the Board of Supervisors recognize the dedicated volunteer leaders throughout the county during the Volunteer Service Awards. For Springfield District, the recipient of the Community Champion Recognition is Sal Speziale, owner of the incredible Ciao Osteria.  During the pandemic, Sal and the Ciao Osteria team raised more than $165,000 from worldwide donations and spent thousands of hours providing free meals to our first responders. They recognized the need to care for those caring for us and were inspired to expand the scope of these deliveries to all the area hospitals, police departments, mental health care workers, 9/11 dispatchers, veterinarians, Sheriff and VA state police departments. They served over 40,200 meals, being recognized by the General Assembly in 2021 via House Resolution No. 770. Due to his focus on public service and giving back, he also was sworn in as a volunteer Reserve Deputy Sheriff for the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office. He represents one of the best Fairfax has to offer.

My office has received many emails and calls about the cancellation of this year’s free County hosted shred events because of perceived equity issues, the County’s new zero waste policies and workforce shortages. I shared my thoughts on this reasoning in a previous edition of the Herrity Report. However, due to high demand, my office and many organizations are hosting events to provide this important service and support residents. Below is a list of events that have been shared with me so far:

RANGERS LEAD THE WAY! Our Ranger came back to us after a few years of being in a home and he is on the hunt for a new home. Are you experienced with 70 lb. dogs who may not like a lot of petting and just experienced with training a dog? He is your guy! Do you like to hike? Again, your guy? All kids in the home over 12? Perfect! He does enjoy being outside and sniffing around. He is wiggle worm when you talk about going out and he has been good here on a leash. Owner reported he would try to get to trucks going by and good leash control is a must, but he is a snuggler in the home and loves to snooze while you watch anything on tv.
