Indoor Ski Slope Coming to the Fairfax County Landfill

When Alpine-X approached me nearly two years ago through my work with the Sports Tourism Task Force offering an innovative way to utilize the elevation of the county-owned landfill in Lorton, I was eager to help. The fiscal, sports, and community benefits of this opportunity are numerous. These include new jobs, exciting new snow sports opportunities, the potential for high school ski teams, new hotel and restaurant amenities for the South County area, premier national competitions, as well as financial benefits to our taxpayers from the lease, sales tax, and hotel tax revenue streams.

Other Upcoming Events:

  • Celebrate Fairfax! Festival this weekend - June 7th - June 9th
  • 2019 High School Graduations will be held at GMU through Saturday, June 15th
  • Route 29 Widening Public Hearing - June 10th
  • Community Resilience Group Meeting - June 10th

Indoor Ski Slope Coming to Fairfax County Landfill

When Alpine-X approached me nearly two years ago through my work as Chairman of the Sports Tourism Task Force with an innovative way to utilize the elevation of the county-owned landfill in Lorton, I was eager to help. The fiscal, sports and community benefits of this opportunity are numerous, including new jobs, exciting new snow sports opportunities, the potential for high school ski teams, new hotel and restaurant amenities for the South County area, and premier national competitions. It also provides financial benefits to our taxpayers from the lease, sales tax, and hotel tax revenue streams. I am extremely excited to partner with Alpine-X to develop a unique downhill snow sports destination right here in Fairfax County.

Alpine-X, a US based firm, is affiliated with SnowWorld, which operates successful indoor ski and snow sports facilities throughout the world. There are approximately 60 indoor snow sports facilities in the world (Japan and Dubai being the most famous) but currently none in North America.

On Tuesday, May 28, 2019, Fairfax County officially accepted Alpine-X's proposal to construct one of the first and largest indoor downhill ski slopes in North America. The snow sports facility will be approximately 450,000 square feet, with multiple slopes, the longest of which will be 1,700 feet long. It will have a terrain fun park, snow tubing runs, a "bunny slope" for beginners and restaurants and bars with breathtaking views of the Potomac and Occoquan rivers. The facility will utilize the elevation of the county-owned landfill in Lorton, adjacent to the Workhouse Arts Center and NOVA Park's Occoquan Regional Park. It will also include a 100-room hotel, ski shop, clothing stores and other amenities.

Other facilities being considered are:
  • An outdoor mountain coaster similar to the Outlaw Mountain Coaster
  • A Wave/surf pool with artificially generated waves
  • A Gondola ride that would lead from NOVA Parks Occoquan Park to the summit
  • A Ropes Course
  • A Zip Line
  • Biking and Hiking Trails
  • Improved Facilities for the radio control plane flying enthusiasts that currently use the landfill site
  • Passive Recreation

The facility would be developed through a Public Private Partnership (P3) agreement and will be privately built and funded. Fairfax County's P3 process allows for competing proposals until September 12, 2019. A development agreement would be finalized with an offeror in 2020. The project will enter the zoning and permitting process at that time. Construction is anticipated to take 36 to 48 months.

For more details please see the redacted (parts are confidential during the competitive period through September 12) proposal at:

I am extremely excited to partner with Alpine-X to develop a unique downhill snow sports destination right here in Fairfax County. Please let me know your thoughts, comments and any concerns.

In addition to the ski slope, the county has officially awarded a contract to Convention, Sports & Leisure International (CSL) that will be conducting a sports complex market and feasibility study to assess the much-needed Field House/Hard Court/Indoor Track facility. The facility would be funded primarily by sports tourism dollars but would also fill significant community use needs.

The Sports Tourism Task Force will be meeting with CSL in the next few weeks. I will provide more updates on these exciting developments in the coming months.
