YWCA & WPH Construction Craft Worker Program

YWCA Hamilton in partnership with Workforce Planning Hamilton is offering the Construction Craft Worker Program for women, gender diverse people, persons who self-identify with disabilities and/or mental barriers, at no cost. Eligible participants will be provided with technical training and job coaching to start their career in the trades.


Program Overview

CONSTRUCTION CRAFT WORKER – SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

FOUNDATION

A Construction Craft Worker works on a wide variety of structures, such

as residential, industrial, commercial, and institutional sites as well as

hydroelectric dams, roadways, bridges, tunnels, mining and railways.

They may also work on utility, landscape and pipeline projects.



A CONSTRUCTION CRAFT WORKER:

  • prepares and cleans up the site, sets up and removes access
  • equipment and works on concrete, masonry, steel, wood and pre-cast
  • erecting projects
  • handles materials and equipment and performs demolition, excavation
  • and compaction activities
  • has responsibility for site security
  • may specialize in operating off-road vehicles, drilling and blasting,
  • scaling, sandblasting, high pressure washing, diving, tunneling and
  • performing emergency rescue


SUCCESSFUL PARTICIPANTS MAY RECEIVE:

  • Job readiness training
  • 28 weeks of training which includes up to 8 weeks PAID placement
  • Support for up to 12 certifications


ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

  • Women, gender diverse people, persons who self-identify with
  • disabilities and/or mental health barriers, 18 years and older
  • Resident of and able to work in Ontario
  • A minimum of grade 10 high school education or its equivalent, and
  • proof of a minimum of 16 credits
  • Willing and able to commit to 28 weeks intensive training program
  • Able to travel to training and work sites

Labour Day Long Weekend!

Happy Long Weekend! Labour day is a day to celebrate the accomplishments of the labour movement and the benefits of having a union at work. But, as is the case with most holidays, the origins of Labour Day come from the struggles of working people and the demand for fairness.

Looking for Motivated Skilled Workers?

Seeking Employers in the Construction sector!

 

We are looking for employers like you who might be interested in taking on a participant (or several participants) for a 12-week placement of paid job training experience- ultimately helping to fill your vacancies. Employers who participate receive $250 per participant per week for the duration of the 12 weeks of placement.


Our team at WPH is funded by the Ministry of Labour, Training, Immigration and Skills Development – and we are supporting the YWCA with a construction craft worker program. The participants in this program will receive job readiness training, 28 weeks of training and support resulting in 12 certificates and practical knowledge to be successfully hired into the construction sector.

 

Benefits to Employer:

  • Financial incentive to hire and offset training costs ($250/week/participant)
  • Pre-screened industry-specific candidates in the skilled trades
  • Job ready applicants with health and safety training
  • Motivated and skilled workers that you can retain
  • Monitoring and support of new hires throughout the duration of work placement

 

Participating Criteria:

  • Offer a work placement based in Ontario
  • Be licensed to operate in Ontario
  • Provide participant with employment terms, conditions and benefits
  • Include participant on payroll
  • Not receive government funds for the same work placement
  • Not displace existing staff or replace laid-off staff
  • Not hire immediate family (e.g. parents, spouse or child)
  • Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Employment Standards Act; the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005, the Human Rights Code and any other relevant standards.
  • Maintain WSIB or adequate third-party general liability insurance (if applicable)

Women Entrepreneurship Loan Fund

NCFDC's DELIA fund provides affordable $15K loans to qualifying women-owned businesses across Canada, a project made possible with the support of FedDev Ontario and ISED Canada.


With the support of The Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) and the Government of Canada’s Women Entrepreneurship Strategy, NCFDC partnered with CORL to develop a fintech-driven microloan platform that would help to address the access to capital gap for Women-owned enterprises across Southern Ontario.
