Local origins of Women's History Month:
Molly Murphy MacGregor
| |
Photograph of the founders of National Women’s History Project, Molly MacGregor, Paula Hammett, Mary Ruthsdotter, Maria Cuevas, and Bette Morgan, 1978 | |
Molly Murphy MacGregor — alongside Mary Ruthsdotter, Maria Cuevas, Paula Hammett, and Bette Morgan — is one of the co-founders of the National Women's History Project, now known as the National Women's History Alliance. Her work contributed to the creation of national Women's History Month, which is recognized every year in March.
Molly Murphy MacGregor was a high school social studies teacher in 1972 when a student asked for her thoughts on the women’s movement. She had none. Six years later, though, she co-founded a Sonoma County organization that would become the National Women’s History Alliance, a nationwide resource for teachers and others.
MacGregor, for many years the executive director of the project, argues that when students learn about Thomas Edison’s light bulb and Henry Ford’s assembly line, they also should hear of Mary Pennington’s refrigerated boxcar and Gertrude Elion’s cancer medication.
“As a nation we cannot afford to continue omitting half of our citizens from our history lessons,” she wrote in 1994. “Women are not a special-interest group.”
What began as Women’s History Week in Santa Rosa in 1978 has been celebrated as National Women’s History Month every March since 1987!

Breaking Traditions, Saving Traditions: Elsie Allen and the Legacy of Pomo Basketry
Friday, March 3– Friday, December 22, 2023
The Elsie Allen Pomo Basket Collection consists of over 130 masterfully woven baskets, ranging from the size of a pencil eraser to nearly 40 inches across, and spanning in date from the late 1800s to the 1980s.
This is the only known collection of its size to have been created entirely by Native American weavers, and it is truly unique in that there is so much ethnographic information on nearly every basket in the collection.
| |
The opening reception will feature speakers from the local Pomo community:
Elsie Allen’s granddaughter, Linda Aguilar
Elsie Allen’s niece Susan Billy, who learned basket weaving from Elsie Allen and had a special relationship with her.
Silver Galleto, founder of the Pomo Weaver’s Society. Galleto is guest curating this event with Museum Supervisor/Curator Rachel Minor.
A Pomo blessing and song will precede the event.
