SCHEDULE of EVENTS Friday, August 5: Free First Friday Noontime Tour with the Santa Cruz Woodworkers, 12noon Santa Cruz Woodworkers are a collaborative group dedicated to fostering an appreciation for locally produced, one-of-a-kind, handmade woodwork. Join the group for a walking tour to learn more about their work. Location: Solari gallery, 12noon, cost: free. Friday, August 5: Free First Friday, 11am-9pm The museum is open with free admission and extended hours. Meet the artists. Saturday, September 10: Family Art Saturday: Woodworking, 12-4pm Create model furniture from different types of wood. Challenge your inner engineer by building mini furniture to withstand weight. Location: Abbott Square, cost: free. Saturday, September 10: From Earth to Art, Downtown Tree Tour and Lecture, 4pm Leslie Keedy, City of Santa Cruz Arborist, and Blair Glenn of Saratoga Tree Service, discuss From Earth to Art. Leslie will lead a walking tree tour of downtown Santa Cruz discussing the scientific nature and historical purpose of local trees. Blair Glenn will showcase how wood is milled and trees are purposed/repurposed and recycled/upcycled into beautiful pieces of functional furniture. Location: Meet in the Museum Atrium. Saturday & Sunday, September 17 & 18: Marquetry Workshop: Create Images with Wood Matthew Werner will teach a workshop on marquetry, the art of creating imagery by cutting and fitting thin pieces of wood together. Each participant will complete projects using various sawing techniques and materials, beginning with the artwork, working through the marquetry process, and applying a finish to the completed design. Saturday, November 5: Inside Look: Woodworking in Santa Cruz County, 1:30pm Steve Jackel, Owner of Jackel Enterprises is creatively known for urban forestry including reusing resources and repurposing wood. As a woodworker for over 30 years, he'll talk about the appropriate uses of different types of wood for general use while leading us on a special tour of the mill, woodshop, and lumberyard to further understand the process of working trees into lumber.
