The Ruth B. Shannon Center for the Performing Arts, Whittier College

Hawaiian music and the outdoors seem to go together! Since we're already having an Aloha Concert in the theatre, why not have more Hawaiian music out on the Patio? And make it free for everyone, whether they are coming to the shows inside or not? This is the idea behind our Patio Performances and we're doing it again this Saturday. So if you need some island time, come on down!

Be sure to check out our web site regularly as we will be adding events throughout the season.  You can order online or through the box office and the price is the same either way. There are no add-ons, no "facilities surcharges" and no fee for parking at the Shannon Center.

Kamaki K. Keawe is a full-time musician, entertainer and 'Ukulele Kumu (instructor). Born and raised in Hawai'i Kamaki's musicality comes from the generations of the Keawe and Kaolulo 'Ohana. Kamaki teaches 'ukulele to the haumana of his group, Na Wa a O Keawe, and conducts 'Ukulele workshops throughout California.

Addison Ching, Hawaiian Steel Guitar, Guitar, and Electric Bass.
Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai'i, Addison relocated to the Southern California area in the 1960s to attend college. Involved with music from a very young age, Addison is trained on various other instruments as well as on the Hawaiian steel guitar.
Although he grew up listening to and appreciating Hawaiian music, it wasn't until several years ago that he became actively involved with playing Hawaiian music. He credits his training and experience to Kumu Alan Akaka. He has performed with the Keawe 'Ohana and has guest-appeared with Jeff Apaka, Ka Hehena, and Cyril Pahinui among others. He has also appeared at various venues in Southern California including a concert at the Shannon Center and several Shannon Center patio performances.

Aloha Concert Series
Saturday March 18, 2017
2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Tickets $47.00

One is a Hawaiian legend who has stretched the boundaries of slack key guitar music while remaining true to the soul of its deeply Hawaiian roots. The other is a rising star of the next generation of slack key players, who uses the style's open tunings to explore multiple genres with ease and flair. Together, they present an evening of superb guitar that explores the beauty of Hawaiian music as it reflects its native land, the range of Hawai'i's many cultural influences, and the complexity of technique that has shaped the distinctively resonant sounds of Hawai'I, slack key guitar or ki-ho'alu. They are joined by lovely dancer Moanalani Beamer, who brings hula and Hawaiian chants to the stage, and adds musical texture with ancient Hawaiian instruments.

We're giving away a pair of tickets to the evening show on Facebook. The give away will happen Wednesday afternoon, so find it and enter now!

Looks like nice weather on the Patio Saturday. Oops, I hope I didn't jinx us!

Thanks for your time,
