"Oh, you are a good husband!" I said to the gentleman at the card section as he picked up one saying, "To my wife on Mother's Day". "I remember one Mother's Day when my husband didn't give me a card, I asked him why?" "My husband replied, "Because you are not my mother." "Ooooo, that did not go over well," I told this shopper. "My advice to you is to keep remembering her on Mother's Day!" We both laughed as I am sure he wondered why he received this free marriage counseling when he just wanted to pick out a card.
I remember that event well.
Two of my
had come over the day before talking about what they were going to give their wives on Mother's Day. One was choosing a blender and
other was going to pick up flowers! I was excited, for Sonny didn't put importance on special days.
"This year, I'll get remembered for sure", I thought.
The next morning arrived.
No gift or even a card.
I was so sure he had gotten the message!
In shock I asked that question which brought forth that hurtful reply.
I responded with, "Well, because of you, I became a mother!"
That still didn't change things.
I had to learn to accept Sonny and love him for who he was.
I knew he loved me and appreciated th
fact I was a good mother to the children we had. (He told me that often, but just didn't show it in his shopping!)
Sonny did not like to go out for dinner or on vacations.
If you wanted to see us, you came to our home!
But because of this I learned to be a good cook and make our home a vacation.
I learned to flow with the situation instead of grumbling and complaining!
The ability to adapt I am sure I learned from my mother and being raised in an Air Force home.
Mom had to adapt to new assignments and places we were called to live.
She had to be Mom and Dad when Dad was gone on temporary duty elsewhere.
Mom chose to see the good in the situation and the glass half full instead of half empty.
I love that about her example.
"Practice what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and model your way of living on it, and the God of peace (of untroubled, undisturbed well-being) will be with you." (Phil 4:9 amp)
I learned how to be grateful in whatever situation I faced.
"I know how to be abased and live humbly in straitened circumstances, and I know also how to enjoy plenty and live in abundance. I have learned in any and all circumstances the secret of facing every situation, whether well-fed or going hungry, having a sufficiency and enough to spare or going without and being in want."
And through Mom, I learned that I can do all that God has called me to do and be because of His strength within me! Through Christ I can be the best Mom, Grandmother and now Great-Grandmother I need to be whether I get a card or not!
"I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me [I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses inner strength into me; I am self-sufficient in Christ's sufficiency]."
I pray this Mother's Day you know how very special you are!
Whether you have had children born in the natural or you have birthed them spiritually!
Do everything you do as unto
and He will reward you!
What you do is making a difference!
He is loving others through you and His love always works! (1 Cor 13:8
