Kauai's Cultural Champions

HILARY JOHNSON

Hilary is the owner and director of Kauai Ballet Academy. She grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah where she began dancing at the age of three. She danced as a member of the Utah Junior Ballet Company and continued studying Classical Ballet while earning a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Utah.

Hilary began teaching in 2001 and has completed the American Ballet Theatre teacher training in Pre-Primary through Level Five of the ABT National Training Curriculum. She started the Kauai Ballet Academy Foundation in order to provide tuition scholarship for students with financial hardships. In 2019 she developed the Majuro Dance Program, providing free classes and gratis performances for underserved children in the Marshall Islands. Under her direction, and with the assistance of her talented teachers, KBA has put on full-length performances of The Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, Cinderella and their annual performance of The Nutcracker. Hilary and her husband, Derek, have lived on Kauai since 2011. While she has worked tirelessly to bring her dreams to life, she says her greatest accomplishment is raising her three children who are now pursuing their own dreams. Hilary is passionate about preserving Classical Ballet and continuing to share this beautiful artform with her community.

The Kauai Ballet Academy is the resident dance company of KCC, offering classes Tuesday - Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings in the PAC Dance Studio
