Put down that painkiller, pick up a yoga mat: VA study finds yoga helps chronic back pain without pills

In the middle of a prescription painkiller overdose crisis in the United States, a San Diego VA study finds that veterans with chronic pain would be well-served to put down the pills and pick up a yoga mat.

Exercises to Help with Test Anxiety  - Anne Ingersoll

As final exam season approaches, the increase of test anxiety does as well. Last summer, I completed a 200 hour yoga certification program called Breathe For Change. The training is geared specifically toward educators and students and offered many helpful exercises for students to practice. I learned a few basic exercises that I believe can help decrease test anxiety (or any other anxieties) if practiced regularly.

Gentle Yoga with Dawn 


45 minutes. Meets 4:15pm Tuesday/Thursday. 9 classes for the month for $72.
This yoga class helps you improve flexibility as you relax. Join this class to find more mobility and peace. All levels. Beginners absolutely welcome. We focus a lot on Yoga Therapy movements to help your body feel amazing.

Cross Training with Kindra   
 
 
60 minutes. Getting bored in the weight room? Not anymore! This high-level class is designed to challenge and improve your strength and endurance, while building lean muscle. A variety of equipment is used so you can target all muscle groups. Each class includes a different and intense workout. Do you have what it takes to be at the top of your game? Prove it to yourself! Challenge yourself.

Reiki at Free Range with Gloria Barr  
 

Gloria Barr has a B.A. from Western Illinois University and is the former Assistant Director of Extended Learning in charge of Study Abroad, retiring in 2004. In 2009, Gloria started her training in Reiki offered through Genesis Hospital in Davenport, Iowa. She is a Reiki Master certified in Usui (Japanese) and Karuna (Tibetan) Reiki.  She is also certified in Healing Hands II.

What is Reiki? 
Reiki is an ancient natural healing treatment used to assist in healing and promoting overall balance within the body. It is administered by a certified Reiki practitioner by using gentle, noninvasive touch to influence and support the body's natural energy flow. Reiki is offered to a fully-clothed client through hands off, or hands on, gentle touch. Clients have reported less anxiety and pain plus more energy and restful sleep. Reiki does not replace medical treatment.

McDonough County Interagency Council's Third Professional Development Conference  

 
On April 18th, Bill Maakestad and Dawn Piper presented hour-long break out sessions for the McDonough County Interagency Council's Third Professional Development Conference. Bill presented Meditation and Mindfulness with a very practical introduction to simple breathing, meditation and mindfulness practices, including a bit of Qigong. Dawn presented Yoga for Self Care, helping participants learn how to move their bodies better and breathe better to find an inner reserve of strength to help them be their best. They had excellent attendance. Thanks to Pete Tarantola the Warren & McDonough County Program Director of Big Brothers and Big Sisters and the Interagency Council for inviting Free Range to participate! We sure appreciate all that these rural providers do!  
 
Earth Fest in the Park   
 
Dawn was invited to teach yoga in Chandler Park for Earth Fest on April 20th - it was a gorgeous day and all had a good time! She didn't get any photos of them doing yoga - but did get a photo of her son and daughter-in-law, Sam Myers and Madison Myers. Sam is a talented artist and a tattoo artist - you can find him on social media at Puke & Cry - he's the one that did the gorgeous dogwood flower tattoo on Dawn's arm in honor of her mom. He works at Lincoln Tattoo right here on the Macomb Square. He has already tattooed several of Dawn's Chair Yoga students! Want a tattoo? World Tai Chi & Qigong Day
   
 
 
On the last Saturday of April each year, the healthful practices of Tai Chi and Qigong are celebrated around the world in hundreds of cities and over eighty nations. This year, on Saturday, April 27, Bill Maakestad led a small group at Free Range in celebrating "One World, One Breath" demonstrating the basic principles and gentle movements of these ancient forms of moving meditation.
