Hamlet
Hamlet’s Story: From Chaos to Calm
Hamlet came to us as a whisper of a life—no more than two or three pounds, barely three weeks old. When someone first pointed her out at a busy community event, it wasn’t even clear she was a piglet. In the swirl of little hands and noise surrounding a petting zoo attraction, she looked more like a frightened little rat than anything else. What was clear: she was terrified.
Handled constantly by well-meaning kids, Hamlet never caught a break—no quiet corner to hide, no time to drink water or rest. When we asked about taking her, the petting zoo owner explained their insurance rules: animals couldn’t be transported to events once they exceeded 15 pounds unless they could walk on and off a trailer themselves. Hamlet wouldn’t be going anywhere until she reached 15 pounds. So we waited.
By mid-September, we finally got the call.
The petting zoo facility sat inside a light industrial building. The front room was lined wall-to-wall—floor to ceiling—with reptiles and birds in small cages. In the back, on concrete floors dusted with a thin layer of shavings, were goats (one with haunting, lifeless eyes), brand-new baby pigs, ducks, geese, and Hamlet. We scooped her up, held her close, and drove her to Huntington Beach.
Those first days weren’t easy. Hamlet was skittish and unsure, not interested in being held, touched, or definitely not put into a harness. We made progress with trust and touch… but the harness? Let’s just say Hamlet had very strong opinions.
For now, she’s been living at Justine’s house—where she’s decided she may actually be a dog. She plays endlessly with Osa and Buck, races around the yard, and comes when you call her (especially if you’re holding something delicious). She loves her chopped veggies, adores attention, and has recently revealed a deep affection for belly rubs.
A beautiful little palace has been built for her by Josh and Phil—complete with thoughtful details and even a swing for the goats nearby. Once this next rain passes through, Hamlet will officially move to Free Rein, where she’ll be welcomed by the rest of our herd and surrounded by the calm, care, and companionship she’s always deserved.
From overwhelmed and frightened to playful and secure, Hamlet’s journey is exactly why we do what we do. She is safe. She is loved. And her best chapters are just beginning.
