Hi!

Making friends online can be confusing. How do you get a conversation started? What if someone doesn’t reply? How do you know when someone is becoming a friend or whether you can trust them? Are they even who they say they are?

These are some of the questions we’ll talk about in my upcoming free seminar for adults on the spectrum, Navigating Online Friendships, sponsored by Northeast Arc’s Adult Autism Support Center.

I’ve been partnering with Northeast Arc for over a year, working together to provide friendship seminars for their clients and they refer families to our groups. They have even helped fund participation for some of our members.

I’ve really enjoyed working with them, and I’m excited that they’ve opened this seminar to the public.

Navigating Online Friendships

Thursday, November 19

7:00–8:30 PM ET

Online and free to attend

To register, email Laura Teckman at LTeckman@ne-arc.org.

Parents and providers, please share it with someone who might like to attend.

We’ll talk about:

  • How friendships grow and how trust develops over time
  • Starting online conversations and keeping them going
  • Waiting for replies and making plans
  • Setting boundaries and recognizing red flags and scams
  • Meeting an online friend in person
  • Handling uncomfortable situations, with opportunities to practice

We’ll also have an optional game at the end for anyone who wants to stay on and hang out.

One thing I hear often is how much harder it can be to make friends after high school. When you’re no longer seeing the same people every day, it can be difficult to figure out where to meet people and how to get a friendship started. Online connections can create opportunities, but there are unwritten rules that aren’t always easy to figure out. We’ll spend time talking through those together.

Looking for ongoing opportunities to connect?

Our weekly groups give young adults opportunities to get to know one another, practice friendship skills, play some games, and receive coaching along the way.

  • Online: Tuesdays, 6:45–7:45 PM ET
  • In person in Tyngsboro: Mondays, 6:45–7:45 PM ET

If you’re connected with Northeast Arc, ask your contact whether funding may be available for you.

Schedule a free call with me so we can talk about whether a group would be a good fit.

Please pass this along to anyone who might benefit.

I hope to see you on November 19!

Warmly,

Nadine
