Closing the Gap
The Mid-Valley STEM-CTE Hub created Closing the Gap to highlight professional women from our region who are working in STEM & Trades fields. This way, girls see local women working in these careers and consider these careers for themselves.
Meet our Closing the Gap role model for June: Savannah Herrell! Savannah is an electrician with Reynolds Electric. Learn more about Savannah here.

CLOSING THE GAP FEATURED ROLE MODEL FOR MAY

Listen to our podcast interview with Sisi below:
There are different ways to participate in Closing the Gap:

Featured Role Model - This includes participating in a 20-30 minute podcast interview and getting your photo taken for the development of a poster.
Written Interview - For this, you will fill out a Q&A form, and we will use that information to write an article.
Speaking opportunities - This can include being available to give a presentation about your career to students, attending a Q&A session for an event, and other opportunities.
Mentorship - This aspect of the project is currently in development, but it would be an opportunity for you to connect with a girl (Middle/High School) who has shown interest in your career.
If you're interested in participating in any or all of these opportunities, please fill out this brief interest form. Thank you for your consideration!
Professional Development for Educators

We know that even with all the exciting opportunities in CTE and STEM right now, it can still be tough to find ways to share ideas with others who are teaching similar courses. To that goal, we wish to pull together a cadre of CTE teachers to attend some sessions with others who teach the same subject (Culinary, Health Occs, Computer Science, Paxton-Patterson, etc.).

Possible outcomes for these sessions would be:
  • Sharing ideas and resources
  • Problem-solving issues
  • Planning instruction together
  • Collaborating on extension ideas/field trips
  • Establishing mentorships or collaborations with industry
  • Whatever else the group would like to do!

We are hoping to have at least four sessions before fall that will be scheduled based on your feedback. Participants will receive a stipend of $50 per session (up to $150) as long as they attend at least three sessions.

Right now, we have two groups formed (Culinary Arts & Health Occupations), who have had their first meeting. Other groups are just one or two people short of getting started. Please take a few moments and let us know your interest and availability by completing this Google Form.

Our friend John Spencer, (see his excellent STEM Week talk on Project-Based Learning here), has an excellent article for teachers titled, "Own Your Professional Learning."

"Professional development is not the same as attending a training or going to a conference. It’s what happens when you gain new skills, expand your worldview, and improve your conceptual understanding within your profession. It involves attitudes, beliefs, mindsets, and values. It goes to the core of your professional identity. And ultimately, there are specific ways that you can own your professional learning. In this series, we explore how to make that a reality."

As many professional development opportunities for K-12 educators continue to be virtual, Oregon's STEM Hub network (STEM Oregon) has put together this spreadsheet of summer professional opportunities for educators. This list is updated automatically every five minutes and each of the 13 STEM Hubs is adding more opportunities as they become aware of them.

To access this spreadsheet, please click here.

If you know of any opportunities you'd like to share on that spreadsheet, please message us at midvalleystemctehub@gmail.com.
