Free Tax Prep Assistance for 2025 is Here!

The Chicago Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS) is bringing back its free Tax Prep program for eligible residents. From January 25 to April 15, 2025, individuals earning up to $35,000 annually and families with incomes up to $67,000 can access free tax preparation services at seven locations across the city. Certified volunteer tax preparers, trained through IRS-approved programs, will assist with federal and state income tax filings.


Residents may qualify for up to $8,183 in Earned Income Tax Credits and other benefits, so don’t miss this opportunity! Services are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, call 211, visit www.goladderup.org, or contact (312) 588-6900.

Tower Crane Installation:

100 West Randolph Street

Starting tonight at 4:00 PM, Dearborn Engineers and Construction Inc. will be installing a tower crane at the new Google Building located at 100 West Randolph Street. Throughout the installation process, West Randolph Street (North Clark Street to North LaSalle Street) will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.



Construction crews will be working throughout the overnight hours. Installation of the tower crane is expected to be completed before morning rush hour on Monday, January 27.

Winter Parking Restrictions

If you see a posted sign that says ‘No Parking’ between 3:00 am and 7:00 am that means that the winter overnight parking ban is in effect on this street, whether it snows or not.


Do not park at this location between 3:00 am and 7:00 am from December 1, 2024 - April 1, 2025 or you will be ticketed or towed.

FREE Smoke Alarms at the 42nd Ward Office

Please call our office at (312) 744-3062 to schedule a pick-up time for a free smoke detector! Pick-ups will be at City Hall, 121 N LaSalle Street, floor 200.  Most fires occur at night when people are sleeping. A smoke detector can alert you when there is a fire, in time to save your life.


Below are some tips to ensure your smoke detector is properly installed and working correctly:

  • Make sure you are testing your detector correctly.
  • When a smoke detector sounds, get outside and call 911. Stay outside!
  • Install smoke detectors within 15 feet of any sleeping room and every level of your house
  • Replace your smoke detector every 10 years. Write the install date on the unit.
  • Don't forget to install Carbon Monoxide detectors on every floor as well.
  • Any questions on smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors, call the Chicago Fire Department Public Education Division at (312) 747-6691.


A special thank you to the Chicago Fire Department for the smoke detector! Smoke detectors can be picked up from the 42nd Ward Office between the hours of 9am-4pm, Monday through Friday located in City Hall, Room 200.

42nd Ward Traffic Closures & Construction Projects

676 North Michigan Avenue Façade Project


Redmond Construction was hired to complete a façade project at 676 North Michigan Avenue. Currently, the following closures are in-place:


  • Sidewalk on the south side of Huron, from Michigan Avenue to a point 150' west thereof
  • Curb lane on the south side of Huron, from Michigan Avenue to a point 150' west there of is being used as a pedestrian walkway
  • Partial sidewalk closure the west side of Michigan, from Huron to a point 100' south thereof


This project is expected to be completed by fall 2025.


Filming


Chicago Fire


On Tuesday, January 28, Chicago Fire will be filming inside 71 East Wacker Drive. During the filming, parking will be prohibited at the following locations:


  • Both Sides Of Garland Court From Lake St To Lower South Water (Tuesday, January 28, 2025 7 am – 11 am)
  • Both Sides Of Wabash From Lake St To Randolph (Tuesday January 28 from 11 am – 8 pm) 
  • West Side Of Garland Court From Haddock Place To Lake St (Tuesday January 28 from 11 am – 8 pm) 
  • Both Sides Of Garland Court From Haddock Place To Lower South Water (Tuesday January 28 from 11 am – 8 pm) 
  • North Side Of Wacker Drive From 87 E Wacker To Wabash (Tuesday January 28 from 11 am – 8 pm) 
  • South Side Of Lake St From Garland Court To Wabash Ave (Wednesday January 29 7 am – 5 pm)

Commercial Filming at 2 East Cedar


On Wednesday, January 29th, a commercial will be filming interior scenes at 20 E Cedar. During filming, parking will be prohibited at the following locations:


  • North Side of Cedar from State St to 30 E Cedar (9am to 8pm)
  • South Side of Cedar from State St to 19 E Cedar (9am to 8pm)
  • Both Sides of State St from Elm St to Cedar St (9am to 8pm)
  • South Side of Elm St from State St to 15 E Elm St (9am to 8pm)

Helicopter Lift: 320 North Dearborn Street


On Saturday, February 1, from 9am to 11am, there will be a helicopter lift at 320 N Dearborn Street. During the lift, the follow will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic:


  • Dearborn, from Wacker to Kinzie
  • Wacker, from State to Clark


Crane Lift: 157 W Grand Ave


On Saturday, February 8, 2025 a crane lift will take place to replace two units on the rooftop of 157 W Grand, resulting in a partial street closure from 8am - 5pm. One lane will remain open on Grand Ave during the lift. A backup day will be scheduled for Sunday, February 9, 2025.


400 North Lake Shore Drive Update


Below is a construction update for activities at 400 North Lake Shore Drive.


Week of 1/20

  • Continue framing, rebar, and pouring to L4
  • Begin MEP work on L1 and basement
  • Concrete pour for core lift #7

 

Week of 1/27

  • Continue framing, rebar, and pouring to L5
  • Continue MEP work on L1 and basement
  • Concrete pour for core lift #8
  • Begin top down excavation on west side of site



River North Lighting Project


The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) has completed new light pole installation in the area bounded by Chicago, Ontario, Orleans, and the River. CDOT has begun removal of the old light poles and continues to restore infrastructure trenching.


Pin & Link Project on Randolph and Columbus


CDOT crews are scheduled to perform steel work and bridge expansion joint rehab along Randolph Street, Columbus Drive, and Stetson Avenue. Please see details below:


General Construction Schedule:

7:00 am - 3:30 pm, Monday - Friday; with the occasional extension to 5:30 pm as needed. 

 

Scope of Work and Access Impacts During Construction:

In general, one lane of travel will be open at all times along each roadway, level, and direction. Access along sidewalks will remain open with detours around the work areas.  


This project is expected to be completed at the end of June 2025. Asphalt restoration will occur in July 2025.



Casino Demolition Update


The demolition team will begin site concrete crushing operations over the next eight weeks. The operation with run from 8 AM until 5 PM. The crusher will be placed in between the Ontario feeder ramp and the southern edge of the current building.
