Health Awareness in May

Throughout the month of May, we are highlighting:

  • Pregnancy & Postpartum Psychosis (PPP) Awareness Day
  • World Asthma Day
  • National Asthma / COPD / Allergy Month
  • National High Blood Pressure Education Month
  • National Melanoma / Skin Cancer Awareness Month
  • Healthy Vision Month

These awareness months encourage us to take the time to learn more about various health causes.

Pregnancy & Postpartum Psychosis (PPP) Awareness Day

Pregnancy and Postpartum Psychosis Awareness Day was launched by survivors, led by Kristina Dulaney, on May 7th, 2021 in an effort to raise awareness about the most devastating of perinatal mental health disorders. We are determined to continue to share, remember, honor and raise awareness for this distinct and traumatizing disease on May 5th, 2023 and every year and every day.

National Asthma / COPD / Allergy Month

It is a peak season for people with asthma and allergies and a perfect time to educate patients, family, friends, co-workers, and others about these diseases. The goal is to increase confidence when using asthma and allergy medicines, including inhalers and injections.

National High Blood Pressure Education Month

High blood pressure—also known as hypertension—is a major risk factor for heart disease. You may think of high blood pressure as something that happens later in life, but high blood pressure can occur at any age. You should have your blood pressure checked at least once a year and talk to a health care provider about what their numbers mean for you.

National Melanoma / Skin Cancer Awareness Month

With over 5 million cases diagnosed in the United States each year, skin cancer is America’s most common cancer. Fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable cancers. By sharing facts about the dangers of unprotected sun exposure and encouraging people to check their skin for warning signs, we can and will save lives. Follow us on social media to see our Safe Sun N' Fun segment this month.

Healthy Vision Month

Taking care of your eyes should be a priority just like eating healthy and physical activity. To keep your eyes healthy, get a comprehensive dilated eye exam: it’s the best way to find out if you need glasses or contacts, or are in the early stages of any eye-related diseases. If you haven’t had an exam for some time, schedule one this month.

With Summer approaching, this is an ideal time to get new contacts, so you are ready for sunglasses. Here are some Summer Tips for Contact Lense Wearers:

  • Wear Sunglasses

Wearing sunglasses in the summer is an essential whether you wear contact lenses or not as they protect your eyes from the sun's harmful UVA and UVB rays. Another not so obvious reason for contact lens wearers to wear a pair of sunglasses is that they can protect your eyes and contact lenses from the winds drying effects.

  • Don't Swim in Contacts

Whether swimming in the ocean or a pool, it is best to take out your contacts before swimming. Microbes can get under your lenses and multiply which could cause an eye infection. It is best to avoid wearing contacts while swimming, but you can use watertight swim goggles. If you suspect you got any water on your lenses, you should dispose of the contacts.

  • Take extra care when applying sunscreen

As a contact lens wearer, it’s vital that you’re especially wary not to get the cream in your eyes. If you do, you may experience a painful stinging sensation and you will also risk contaminating your lenses. To avoid this, use your fingers to delicately rub the product around your eyes, not forgetting your eyelids.

  • Wear Eyeglasses Occasionally

Whether it’s just for a day or a whole weekend, it’s a good idea to give your eyes a break from your contact lenses. While choosing to wear your lenses each day is perfectly safe in most cases, many opticians advise wearing glasses occasionally to give your eyes a rest and keep your eye health in check.

  • Schedule an eye exam and contact lens fitting
